G. E. JAHNSAN.
GARPBNTERS REEL. No. 560,799. PatentedMay 26, 1896.
J D 51 7 y/ WITNESSESr INVENT'OR,
v uslyfljlman, I; X BY ATTORNEYS NITED STATES GUSTAF E. JAHNSAN,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CARPENTERS REEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 560,799, dated May 26, 1896. Application filed October 23,1895. Serial No. 566,602. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUsTAF E. J AI-INSAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpenters Reels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the ac companying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to carpenters reels, and the object thereof is to provide a device of this class on which is mounted a chalkline which may be unwound or wound up in the manner of an ordinary measuring-tape, a further object being to provide a device of this class so constructed and arranged that the line will be automatically chalked as it is withdrawn from the reel; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section of my improved reel; Fig. 2, a side view thereof; Fig. 3, a similar view of a frame or reel on which the line is wound; and Fig. 4, a view similar to that of Fig. 2, showing the opposite side.
In the practice of my invention I provide a circular casing A, which is similar in form to that of an ordinary tape-reel, and passing through said casing, centrally thereof, is a shaft B, provided at one side with a projection I), to which is pivoted the usual plate D, provided centrally on one side thereof with a button or head cl, and formed in the adjacent side of the casing A is a depression F, which corresponds in form to the plate D, and in the central portion of which is a supplemental depression. adapted to receive a head or button d.
Mounted on the shaft D is a spider frame or reel G, composed of a central tubular head g and radial arms g, said radial arms being arranged at each end of the tubular head g, and being outwardly inclined from said head on each side, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and
secured to the head g of said reel is a line H, which is adapted to be wound thereon, and the free end of which is adapted to be passed through a perforation or opening it in the perimeter of the casing A.
In practice I place within the casing A a quantity of chalk, preferably in the condition of a powder, and this chalk is inserted into said casing through a hole K in the side thereof opposite the pivoted or hinged plate D, and this hole K is closed by a plate L, which is held in position by a nut M.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. The line being wound on the head g of the reel G, and the chalk being placed within the casing H, and the opening K closed by the plate L, all that is necessary when it is desired to use the chalk-line is to withdraw the same from the casin g in the manner of an ordinary measuring-tape, and the line in this operation will be chalked, as will be readily understood. The plate I), or the head or button d thereon, serves as a handle for winding up the line, and it will be understood that the reel G is secured to the shaft B and revolves therewith.
It will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a simple and effective device, and one which is comparatively inexpensive.
My invention is not limited to the exact form, construction, and arrangement of parts shown and described, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patout-- A chalk-line reel comprising a circular casing within which is mounted a shaft, which is revoluble therein, a reel mounted on said shaft, and adapted to revolve therewith, a line or cord mounted on said reel and projecting through a hole or opening in the perimeter of the casing, and means for revolvin g said shaft, and said casin g being provided with an opening in one side thereof, through which chalk may be inserted thereinto, and my invention I have signed my name, in said opening being adapted to be closed by a presence of the subscribing witnesses, this plate mounted on said shaft, and said reel 22d day of October, 1895.
being composed of a central tubular head, GUSTAF E. JAIINSAN. 5 and radial arms or similar devices, substan- Vitnesses:
tially as shown and described. 0. GERsT,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as K. ENsLIE.
