BOTTLE-MOLDING MACHINE.

lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in bottle-making machines, the object of the invention being to provide simple and efficient means for forming the neck of a bottle.
A further object is to so construct the machine that one operation of a lever will serve to project a tube through the glass in the neck portion of the mold and at the same time open a valve to permit air under pressure to enter the glass in the mold and form it into proper shape.
A further object is to provide simple and efficient means whereby to open the neck por tion of the mold.
A further object is to so construct the machine that the tube which passes through the neck portion of the mold can be withdrawn by the operation of a lever and so that by then moving the same lever laterally the neck portion of the mold can be opened.
Afurther object is to produce a bottle-making machine which shall be simple in construction, easy to operate, and which shall be effectual, in all respects, in the performance of its functions. 7
lVith these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of a bottlemaking machine embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is across-section. Fig. 3 is a detail view.
A represents a table supported on legs a and provided on its top with a mold B. A standard 1 is disposed at or near one end of the table A, or, more properly, from a baseplate 2, secured to said table. The standard 1 is provided at or near its top with a forwardly-projecting arm 3, having a socket 4 in its under face, into which socket a pintle 5 at the upper end of a bracket 6 loosely enters, the lower end of said bracket being provided with a pintle 7, mounted in a suitable socket in the base-plate 2, said bracket being thus mounted to swing for a purpose which will be hereinafter explained. The bracket 6'is made with an outwardly-projecting arm S, to the free end of which a vertically-disposed sleeve 9 is secured and serves to re ceive a vertically-movable tubular rod 10, the lower end of which is adapted to enter the mold. The upper end of the rod is pivotally connected with a lever 11 by means of links 12, and said lever is pivotally connected to bars 13, the lower ends of which are attached to the bracket 6. The rear end of the lever 11 is preferably provided with a weight 14, adapted to counterbalance the forward part of the lever and the devices attached thereto. A laterally-projecting pipe 15 communicates with the tubular rod 10 and is adapted to receive a flexible or other pipe connected with an air-compressor. In the lateral pipe 15 a valve 16 is located and provided with an arm 17, to the free end of which one end of a link or rod 18 is pivotally connected, the other end of said link or rod being pivoted to the arm 8 of bracket 6, so that when the leverll is raised or lowered said valve will be opened or closed.
The portion 19 of the mold (by means of which the neck of -the bottle is formed) is made in two parts 20 21, hinged together, and the pintle of said hinge serves to pivotally connect said part 19 to the top of the main portion B of the mold. The respective parts of the part 19 of the mold are recessed o bracket 6 being pivotally supported as above explained, it can be swung so as to move the parts carried thereby laterally in one direction, but will be prevented from moving laterally in the other direction by means of an arm 23, secured at one end to said bracket and adapted at its other end to engage the standard 1. Thus it will be seen that when the bracket is swung into operative position it will be prevented from moving farther than is necessary to cause the rod 10 to properly aline with the hole in the mold by means of the arm or stop 23. The parts 21 of the mold may be provided with arms or handles 24, by means of which to open the portion 19 of the mold, but I prefer to also provide means whereby the portion 19 of the mold can be opened automatically when the bracket is swung laterally. To accomplish this, the devices now to be explained will be employed. An arm 25 is secured to and projects forwardly and slightly laterally from the lower portion of the bracket 6. To the free end of this arm one end of a link 26 is pivotallyconnected, the other end of said link being piv oted to the part 20 of the mold. Another link 27 is pivoted at one end to the arm 25 at a point rearwardly from its end and the other end of said link 27 is pivoted to another link 28, the other end of the latter being pivoted to the part 21 of the mold. From this construction and arrangement of parts it will be seen that when the bracket 6 is swung laterally the parts 20 21 will be moved outwardly in opposite directions and release the neck of the bottle.
The mold B extends through the table A, and on the under side of said table a movable plate or block 29 is located and made with an opening 30, adapted to aline with the opening in the mold, said plate or block being carried by a slide 31 and to said slide an arm or handle 32 is secured, by means of which to operate it. The slide 31 is provided with a depending arm 33,.to the lower end of which a lever 34 is pivoted at a point between its ends. To the inner end of the lever 3% a plunger-rod 35 is pivoted and said plungerrod is provided at its upper end with a plunger 30, adapted to operate in the hole in the plate or block 29. The free end of the lever 34: is provided with a weight 37, adapted to counterbalance the inner end of the lever and the plunger and plunger-rod carried thereby. The plate or block 29 maybe swung out of line with the mold B for the insertion of the glass into it, after which said plate or block will be moved in line with the mold, and the free end of the lever 34: will then be depressed to cause the plunger 36 to ascend and force glass into the portion 19-01? the mold, whereby to form the neck. The free end of the lever 11 will then be lowered to cause the tubular rod to enter the neck portion of the mold. Then the lever 11 is thus lowered, the downward movement of the tubular rod will cause the valve 16 to be opened and allow compressed air to enter the mold and form or shape the glass therein. The lever 11 will then be raised to remove the tubular rod. A lateral movement of the lever 11 will now cause the bracket 6 to swing laterally and open the portion 19 of the mold, as above explained.
My improvements are simple in construction, easy to manipulate, and effectual in all respects in the performance of their functions.
Slight changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details of construction herein set forth; but, 1
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a bottle-makin g machine, the co1nbination with a mold having a sectional neck portion and a vertically-adjustable tubular rod mounted in a laterally-swin gin g bracket; of a lever for raising and lowering the same, devices connecting the swinging bracket and the sections of the neck portion of the mold whereby said sections are opened and closed by swinging said lever and bracket, substantially as set forth.
2. In a bottle-making machine, the combination with a mold having a sectional neck portion, of a swinging bracket, and devices connected with said swinging bracket and with the sections of the neck portion of the mold, whereby when said bracket is swung the said neck portion of the mold will be opened or closed, substantially as set forth.
3. In a bottle-making machine, the combination with a mold having a sectional neck portion, of a swinging bracket, a lever pivotally supported by said bracket, a rod connected to said lever and adapted to enter the neck portion of the mold, an arm projecting from the swinging bracket, and links connecting said arm with the sections of the neck portion of the mold, so that an upward and then lateral movement of the lever will withdraw said rod from the mold and then cause the neck portion of the mold to be opened, substantially as set forth.
4. In a bottle-makin g machine, the combination with a mold and a swinging bracket, said mold having a sectional neck portion, of an arm projecting from the swinging bracket, a link pivoted at its respective ends to said arm and one section of the neck portion of the mold, a link pivoted to the arm inwardly from its end, and a link pivoted at one end to said last-mentioned link and at the other end to the other section of the neck portion of the mold, substantially as set forth.
5. In a bottle-makin g machine, the combination with the main portion of a mold and a swinging bracket, of a neck portion of the mold made in two sections hinged together and pivoted to the main portion of the mold at the hinge, an arm projecting from the swin ging bracket, a pivoted link connecting the end of said arm with one section of the neck portion of the mold, a link pivoted to said arm inwardly of the end of the latter, and a link connected at one end to said last-mentioned link and at the other end to the other section of the neck portion of the mold, substantially as set forth.

6. In a bottle-making machine, the combi nation with a mold and a bracket, of a vertically-movable tubular rod adapted to vertically move in the bracket and enter the mold, a pipe communicating with said tubular rod, a valve in said pipe, an arm connected with said valve, and a rod pivoted at one end to said arm and at the other end to said bracket, substantially as set forth.
7. In a bottle-makingmachine, the combination wit-h a mold, of a movable block or plate having a perforation to aline with said mold, means for moving said block or plate, a pivoted lever, a weight carried by one end of said lever, a plunger-rod pivoted to the other end of the lever and a plunger on said plunger-rod adapted to operate in said perforated block or plate and the mold, substantially as set forth.
8. In a bottle-making machine, the combination with a mold and a table on which the mold is located, of a slide on the under side of the table, a plate or block carried by said slide and having a hole to aline with the bore of the mold, a lever pivotally supported by said slide, a plunger-rod pivoted to the lever, and a plunger carried by the plunger-rod and adapted to operate in the hole in said plate or block, substantially as set forth.
9. In a bottle-making machine, the combination with a table and a mold located thereon, of a slide under the table, a rod or handle for moving said slide, a plate or block carried by said slide and having a hole to aline with the bore of the mold, an arm depending from said slide, a lever pivoted between its ends to said arm, a plunger-rod pivoted to one end of said lever, a plunger carried by said rod and adapted to operate in the hole in said plate or block and a counterbalancin -weight on the other end of said lever, substantially as set forth.
10. In a bottle-making machine, the combination with a table, a mold thereon and a standard, of a bracket attached to said standard, a vertically-movable rod carried in the free end of said bracket and adapted to enter the mold, links attached to said bracket, a lever pivoted between its ends to said links and to said vertically-movable rod, and a counterbalancing-weight on said lever, substantially as set fort-h.
