SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,352, dated August 25, 1896.,

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MAX STROHBACH, car= riage-builder, of 5 Warthe, Magdeburg, in the Empire of Germany, have invented an Improved Umbrella or Sunshade Holder for Cycles, Rowing-Boats, and other Vehicles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to an apparatus for holding an umbrella or sunshade on a cycle, boat, or other vehicle; and it has for its object the ability to adjust the umbrella orsunshade in any desired position.

In the accompanying drawin gs, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of the apparatus, and Fig. 2 is a View in side elevation thereof.

Throughout both views similar parts are marked with like letters of reference.

The apparatus consists, essentially, of a socket or holder at, adapted to receive the umbrella or sunshade. This socket orholder has a shank a, terminating in a fork aiwhich is pivoted by pins or screw-bolts bto a boss f,

which is mounted on a pin g, carried by one part of a clamp c, which is adapted to fix the apparatus to the cycle, boat, or other vehicle, the clamp, as shown, being adapted to be attached to the steering-handle bar 2' of a cycle. The clamp c is preferably made in two parts hinged together, as shown, and is clamped to its support by means of a bolt d. The position of the socket or holder awith respect to the boss f is fixed and determined by the set-screw i, screwed in a snug a on one side of the fork a of the socket or holder a, and the position of the boss f with respect to the clamp c is fixed and determined by means of the nut h on the free end of the pin g.

It will be seen that with this device the umbrella or sunshade can be caused to assume any desired inclination or position, as it can be adjusted in two planes at right angles to one another, and, furthermore, the entire apparatus can be clamped to its support in any desired position relative thereto.

I wish it to be particularly understood that I do not limit myself to the precise details of construction hereinbefore described, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, but that I hold myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.

hat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

The umbrella-holder herein described consisting of a cylindrical clamp c for a horizontal bar, provided with an upwardly-pro j ecting end threaded pivot g, a hub f mounted to turn on the pivot g, a clamp-nut h screwing on the pivot 9 against the hub f, threaded pivots b, projecting from opposite sides of the hubf, at right angles to the pivot g, a holder at having bifurcated ends pivoted on the pivots b, and clamp-nuts screwing on the pivots 17 against said bifurcated ends.

2. The umbrella-holder herein described consisting of a clamp 0 provided with an upwardly-projecting pivot g, a hub f mounted to turn on the pivot g and carrying opposite pivots b at right angles to the pivot g and having a conical bearing around one pivot b, a clamp-nut screwing on the pivot g against the hub f, a holder at having bifurcated ends pivoted on the pivots b and a boss on its side, and a binding-screw working in said boss against said conical bearing on the holder obliquely to the pivot f.
