Description

N, PETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, wAsmNGTON. n c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
-RIGHARD MONTGOMERY, OF NEW-YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORRUGATED METALLIC PLATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,779, dated July 31, 1866.
To all lwhom 'it may concern:
Beit known that I, RICHARD MONTGOMERY. of the city and county of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a new and usefulimprovement in the method of strengthening rolled or hammered plates or sheets of iron, steel, copper, and other metals; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference thereon, the same forming a part of this specication.
The nature oimyinvention consists in doubly corru gati n g the plate-that is to say, in so bending the plates that the one series of continuous bends or corrugations shall crossthe other 'similar series of bends or eorrugations at right angles thereto.
In the drawings, Figure 2 is a View showing these corrugations in both directions; Fig. 3, a section thereof, showing the bend or corrugation in either direction 5 and Fig. l, the application of sheets of metal corrugated in'this manner in the construction of -steamboilers. As the two latter are sectional views, of course only one series of the corrugations can be shown by them.
Although I have in the drawings (Fig. l) shown this device as applied to the inner and outer shell of the tire-chamber of the fire-box and boiler, as exemplifying its use for this purpose, it may be equally as well applied to the lues and stacks or steamchimneys; nor do I confine myself to any of these, but propose its use in any place or purpose where such a structure may be deemed advisable.
In this invention I do not claim, broadly, bending corrugated plates transverseto the direction of the eorrugat-ions, nor do I claim plates with alternate dish-like depressions and protuberauces on both sides; but
What` I do claim a srny invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is l A plate or plates of rolled wrought metal doubly corrugated, substantially as described.
' RICHARD MONTGOMERY. Witnesses:
