' J. N. GARDNER.
, BUTTON.
No. 570,872.. Patented Nov. 3, 1896.
UNITED STATES JOSEPH N.
GARDNER, OF TUOKERMAN, ARKANSAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO CRAWFORD WEST, OF SAME PLACE.
BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 570,872, dated November 3, 1896.
Application file May 21, 1896. Serial No. 592,426. (No model.)
To a, whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OSEPH N. GARDNER, a citizen of the United States, residin at Tuckerman, in the county of Jackson and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in buttons, the object of the same being to provide a cheap, indestructible button which may be securely fastened to a garment and when once in place cannot be removed without tearing the material of which the garment is made.
The invention consists of a base having a rectangular projection thereon, a head formed with a shank and with a rectangular opening therethrough which fits upon said base, and a screw for securing the two parts together.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my button complete. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section through the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the base detached, and 'Fig.
4 is a similar view of the head.
Like reference-numerals indicate like parts in the different views.
The base 1 is formed with a rectangular extension 2, having a screw-threaded opening 3 in its upper end. The said extension 2 fits within a similarly-shaped slot 4 in the head 5, the latter being formed with a flange 6 upon its lower end, between which and the outer edge of the head a groove 7 is formed. Fitting within the threaded opening 3 in the rectangular extension 2 of the base is a screw 8, having a head 9 thereon which fits a recess 10 in the outer surface of the head 5, lying flush with said head.
-shaped needle, and the head 5 is afterward placed upon the base 1, the extension 2 fit- It will thus be seen that my improved but- I ton is extremely simple in construction, can be readily applied and removed when desired, but when in place cannot be pulled off without tearing or otherwise destroying the material of the garment in which it is placed.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an article of manufacture, a button, made up of a base having a rectangular extension thereon, forming a shoulder between it and said extension, a head having a rectangular opening therein through which said extension projects, and a screw applied to the upper end of said extension, engaging the outer surface .of said head, whereby the cloth to which said button is applied is tightly gripped between the lower end of said head and the shoulder formed on said base, substantially as described.
2. As an article of manufacture, a button, made up of a base having a rectangular extension thereon forming a shoulder between it and said extension, a head having a rectangular opening therein through which said extension projects, and a circular recess in its upper surface, and a screw whose head fits within said circular recess and whose shank engages the extension on said base, whereby the cloth to which said button is applied is tightly gripped between the lower end of said head and the shoulder formed on said base, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH N. GARDNER.
