(No Model.)
J.'A. & P. P. BARTOSZEWICZ.-
PASSE-PARTOUT.
No. 577,676. Patentfed Peb.23.1897.
JOHN A. BARTOSZEWICZ AND PAUL P. BARTOSZEWIOZ, OF CHIOAGO,- ILLINOIS.
PASS E-PARTOUT.
SPECIFIOATION formng part of Letters Patent No. 577,676, daoed February 23, 1897.
Application fi1ed April 13, 1896. Serial No. 587,296. (N o modal.)
'that class of light picture-frames known as passe-partouts; and it consists in certain pecuharities of the construction, novel arrangement, and operation of the various parts thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully set fortl1 and specificall claimed.
The objeots of our invention are, first, 130
provide a passe-partout which shall be simple and inexpensive in construction yet neat and attractive in appearance, and, second, such a passe-partout by reason of the peculiar construction of which the mat or frame to be interposed between the picture and glass may be readily removed or inserted without the removal or displacement' of the back of the frame.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention pertains to make and use the same, We Will now proceed to describe it, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a rear perspective view of our passe-partout. Fig. 2 is a rear view in clevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a rear view in clevation, showing the mat partly withdrawn from the frame and the sliding cover of the back removed. Fig. 4 is a face view in clevation, showing the mat partly withdrawn from the frame; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged cross-sectional view taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 5.
Similarletters refer to like parts throughout the different views of the drawings.
A represents the glass, which may be made of any suitable size and form, but preferably rectangular, as shown in the drawings. On
the rear surface of the glass and along three sides of the perimeter thereof is placed a strip or strips a, of a thickness somewhat greater than the mat B. On the rear surface of the strips ais placed a board or back C, wlrioh may be reinforced by an additional board or back C, secured to its rear surface. The board 0 is provided'with a central opening 0 for the reception of a photograph or pioture, and the board 0 is formed with a like opening 0, which is slightly tapering toward its upper end and is open at its lower portion to receive the sliding cover D, which is provided with a hinged support d to hold the frame in an inclined position, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
As is clearly seen in Fig. 5, the opening a in the board 0 is formed With angular edges to receive the correspondingly-shaped edges of the cover D, which is adaptcd to be inserted in said opening or removed therefrom when it is desired to place the picture in the opening c and against the mat B, which is provided with an opening b for the-exposure of the photograph or picture. The board C, strip or strips a, and glass A are secured to- 'gether loy means of suitable strips of material e, secured on their edges, as is clearly shown in the diiferent views of the drawings. The strips e extend inwardly on the face of the glass A beyond the inner surface of the pieces a, chus concealing the crevice between said pieces and the edges of the mat.
WVhile we have shown the frame open at its bottom to allow of the insertion. or withdrawal of the mat, yet we may construct the frame so that the open space thereof may be located at the sides or top, as may be desired.
By employing our invention it is apparent that the mat B may be covered with eloth b or other material, upon Which ornamental designs may be embroidered or embellished, and may be inserted or removed from the frame at pleasure and without displacing the picture or removing the back.
Having thus fully described our invention,
what we claim as new, and desire to seoure by Letters Patent, is
As an improved article of manufacture, a passe-partout, consisting of the glass A, the
pieces or strips a, secured to its rear surface of the glass A, stripsa, and back C, substanat three sdes of its perimeter, aboard or back tially as described. O, having the central opening c, secured on 1 the rear surface of the strips a, the reinf0rc- 5 ing board 01' back C, having the openng c,
the sliding cover D, provided WDh the hinged W'itnesses: support d, and adapted to fit in the opening CHAS. C. TILLMAN, c, and the securing-strps e, untng the edges E. A. DUGGAN.
