Description

IMPROVEMENT IN TREAD-WEEEL HOISTING POWER.
JOSEPH B. CASSEL, 0F WORCESTER SHIP, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 59,818, dated November 20, 1866.
SPEGIFCATION- TO ALL WHOM IT HAY GONGERN:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH B. CASSEL, of Worcester township, in the county of Montgomery, and State of Pennsylvania, have made a new and useful Improvement in Tread-Wheel Hoisting Power; and I do hereby declare the following to be a fullclear, and exact description of the nature, construction, and operation of the same, sufficient to enable one skilled in the art to which it appertains to construct and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which are made part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation.
Figure 2 is a front elevation.
v'The improvement consists of an arrangement of a tread-wheel hoisting power to be placed in a barn,or under other analogous circumstances, for the purpose of enabling a person to lift hay or sheaves into the mow or perform other work of similar character.
In the drawings, A is the frame of the machine, B the serrated periphery of a wheel jounnalled at C, and provided with steps, E is a rope which winds upon the axis, F, of the wheel, as the latter is revolved; the rope, as it is wound, passes over a sheave, G, which is suspended from thel roof or a beam, and thence either immediately to the object, H, to b'e raised, or else, if additional power is required, it may pas-s through another pulley, I, and be attached, as at J, to some permanent object.
The serrations on the edge of wheel are engaged by a pawl, K, and retain the wheel in position against the action of the Weight H, and are removed by means of the lever L, to permit the-rope to run olf, ready for the attachment of the hook to another load. v I
The operator stands` uponthe platform, M, grasping the handles, N, which enable him to throw his muscular force, if required, as well ashis weight, upon the steps D, as they consecutively present themselves as the wheel revolves. v
The required position of the object, bale, or forkful of hay being attained, it is lowered into position by stepping olf the wheel and raising the pawl K, by means of the lever L.
What I claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the tread-wheel, provided with notches and-pawl, and the platform with handles, the whole being adapted as described to the purpose set forth.
To the above specification of my improved tread-wheel hoisting power I have signed my hand this twentysecond day of May, 1866.
JOSEPH B. CASSEL.
