SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Batent No. 601,823, dated April 5, 1898.

Be it known that I, OSCAR M. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Kalamazoo, in the county of Kalamazoo and State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Burial- Casket, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in burial-caskets, and more particularly to a modification of certain improvements in the construction shown in my patent issued April o, 1897, No. 580,339.

The objects of this construction are, first, to provide a more perfectly-adjustable lid for the coffinto serve asasupport for decorations or flowers; second, to provide an efficient means of adjusting and supporting the lid to one side or to the'end of the body portion, and further objects appearing definitely in the detailed description. I accomplish these objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a top plan view of a burialcasket embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the construction shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a casket, showing my improved device applied to adjust the coffin-lid beyond the head of the same. Connecting the lid to the body are links 0, which are pivoted on pivots E, one of which is in a suitable slot or opening in the under side of the lid B and the other of which is secured inside the opening in the top, as indicated in Fig. 4. Adjustable bolts F are placed on the lid and on the top to be moved into the path of the links E to secure an adjustment of the same to varying heights and angles. A hook D is provided on the lid B to hook under a link 0 and hold the lid in the horizontal position, so that it may continue to serve as a support for any decoration or flowers placed upon it. A suitable notch is cut in the body for the link to drop into and receive support when it is desired to adjust'the lid to the lowest position possible, as indicated in Fig. 5. Catches or fasteners H of the usual construction are supplied for securing the lid in place, and these are placed exactly opposite. The links 0 are of proper length, so that when it is desired the cover can be raised up and swung over to one side and the catch of the one side will swing over and take hold of the plate on the opposite side, as clearly indicated in Fig. 5.

In case the lid is made adjustable toward the head the catch toward the center will engage the plate at the head of the casket and the lid will be supported, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3. It will be seen from this description that the lid is adjustable to various positionsto one side of or to the head of the casket, according to which direction the connections are made. The particular fastening-catch that is used to secure the lid is not my invention, and I do not wish to be understood as claiming the same.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a burial-casket the combination of the body portion A; the lid 13, with recesses on its under side; links C, pivoted at each end with the pivots E, one of which is located in a recess in the lid and the other of which is located in the side of the opening in the top; adjustable bolts F, with shoulders F, thereon located in the lid and on the top in position to project into the path of the links for adjusting the same; a hook D, on the lid positioned to hook under a link to sustain the top in the level position; catches on the lid positioned to engage catch-plates on the body to fasten the lid and to adjust the same 011 a level with the top in the open position all coacting together substantially as described for the purpose specified.

In a burial-casket the combination of the body portion A; the lid B, with recesses on its under side; links 0, pivoted at each end with the pivots E, one of which is located in the recess in the lid and the other of which is located in the top; catches on the lid positioned to engage catch-plates on the body to fasten the lid and to hold the same on a level with the top in the open position all coacting together substantially as described and specified.

3.
