SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 602,853, dated April 26, 1898.

To all whom t may concern.-

Be it known that I, WALTER HENRY J UMP, residing at Audubon, in the county of Audubon and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful End-Gate, of which the following is a specification. I Y

This invention relates to an improved endgate; and the object of the same is to provide a combined dump and scoop board which is simple in construction and effective in operation, the same being so constructed that it may be quickly and readily manipulated for use as a scoop-board or for dumping.

A further object of the invention is to provide an improved fastening device by means of which the hoard may be secured to the wagon when not in use as a scoop-board.

Vith the above objects in View the invention consists of a board having a hinged lower section, side pieces notched on their outer edges adjacent their lower ends to engage the projecting ends oi' a strip secured to the wagon-body, a sliding bar carried by the board and having its outer end screw-threaded to receive a hand-nut, a chain secured at one end to the wagon side and at its opposite end engaging the inner end of the sliding bar and provided adjacent its upper end with a larger link to engage the hooked end of the sliding bar when the scoop-board is raised, and means for securing the hinged section either raised or lowered.

My invention further consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parte hereinafter fully described, and afterward specifically pointed out in the claims.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention most nearly appertains to make and use the same, I will now'` proceedto describe the construction and operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, in which- Figure lis a perspective view of a wagon with my improved combination end-gate applied thereto, showing the board closed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the board adapted for use as a scoop-board. Fig. 3 is a similar View showing the board raised for dumping. Fig. 4C is a perspective view of the board detached from the wagon. Y Fig. 5 is a sectional plan view of the end-gate and the rear end of the wagon. Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional View of the same. Fig. 7 is a detail view of a portion of the wagon-body, showing the strip attached thereto upon which the board swings when used as a scoop-board. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the sliding bar and nut for actuating the same.

In the accompanying drawings, A indicates the fixed upper section of the board, having the side pieces B secured thereto, which side pieces are notched on their outer edges at their lower ends, as indicated at C, to engage the projecting ends of a strip D, secured to the under side of. the wagon-bottom at its rear end.

Secured to the ou ter side of section A, at its lower edge, is the strip E, to which is hinged the swinging section F of the gate, said section having the strip G secured upon its outer side, the hinges being secured to said strips E and G. Upon the outer side of section F, adjacent its lower edge, is a strip H, having the straps I at its respective ends, in which are formed eyes to receive the hooks J, pivoted to the side pieces of the gate, so that said swinging section or dump-board is held closed when not in use, as illustrated in Fig. 1. A strip K, carried by section A, adjacent its upper edge, is provided with a hook L, adapted to engage a staple M, carried bythe strip H of the dumpebcard, so that the latter is held raised,as illustrated in Fig. 3, when the Wagon is to be dumped.

Attached at one end to each side of the wagon is a chain N, which at its oppositeend is secured to the inner end of a bar O, which is slidable in a loop P upon the side piece of the gate, said chains being of sufficient length to permit the gate to swing downwardly when used as a scoop-board, as indicated in Fig. 2.

The outer end of each bar is reduced and screw-threaded, as illustrated at Q, and eX- tends through a perforated strap R, secured to the strip E of the fixed section, and receives a nut S, having an operating-handle S. The inner end of the bar has a hook T formed on its upper edge, which is adapted to engage a large link T in the chain adjacent its upper end when the board is closed. By placing this large link in engagement with the bar and operating the Jhand-nut the board IOO is pressed tightly against the ends of the side pieces of the wagon, and thus preventing any of the contents of the Wagon spilling therefrom.

In operation, when it is desired to use the gate for dumping, the hooks .I are disengaged from the swinging section and the latter is` swung upwardly and retained in position by the hook L. When, however, it is desired to use the board as a scoop-board, the handnuts are loosened slightly and the large links of the chain disengaged from the sldingbars, when the board may be swung downwardly, as indicated in Fig. 2.

From the above description it will be seen that I have produced a combined dump and scoop board which is very simple in construction and effective in operation, the same being so arranged that it can be used either for dumping or as a scoop-board, as may be desired, and also that I have provided anv improved fastening device for holding the board in engagement With the Wagon sides When not in use as a scoop-board. f

While I have illustrated and described the best means now known to me for carrying out my invention, I do not wish to be understood as restricting myself to the exact details of construction shown and described, but hold that any slight changes or variations such as might suggest themselves to the ordinary mechanic would properly fall within the l-imit and scope of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is

1. The combination with a wagon, of a swinging end-gate therefor, a sliding bar carried thereby having a screw-threaded rear end adapted to pass through a strap on the yend-gate, a hand-nut engaging said screwthreaded end for effecting the movement of the bar, a chain secured at one end to the wagon and at its opposite end to the sliding bar and adapted to be placed in engagement with said bar at a point adjacent its attachment to the wagon, substantially as described and for the purpose stated.

2. The combination with a wagon-bed, of a swinging end-gate therefor, fastening means for said end-gate comprising a chain, one end of which is secured to the wagon-bed, an enlarged link or ring interposed in said chain at a point adjacent the said secured end, a sliding bar carried by the sides of said gate to which the other end of the chain is fastened, having onits inner end a hook adapted to be engaged by the enlarged link of the chain and having its outer end screw-threaded and adapted to pass through a strap on the endgate, and a hand-nut engaging said screwthreaded end, substantially as described and for the purposey stated.
