TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: y
Be' it known that I, .ASHAEL TODD, JR., of Pultneyville, in the county of Wayne, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Marking Stamp for Numbering and Lettering Sheep; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings,
l making part of this specification, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a letter, with its handle or stem, s, made on my plan.
Figure 2 is a similar View of one of the figures or numerals, made on the same plan.
This invention consists in providing as a neiv article of manufacture a very simple, cheap, and eh'icient device for numbering, and for lettering sheep, consisting of cast lcttersor numerals of skeleton form, and cach having a skeleton or projecting shank to serve as a handle. p
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
I make the Whole alphabet of letters, andthe ten Arabic characters or numerals, of any suitable sz e. They are.
each provided with ahandle or shank, s, cast upon the back, =as shoivn in the drawings. The paint is mixed to a proper consistency, as ordinarily used for such purposes, and spread upon a smooth hoard. The operator takes the desired letter or ligure by the stem, s, in his fingers, similar to the manner of holding a pen, and after dipping the face upon the paint on the hoard, places it upon the animal. v.After removing the stamp, if he nds that the mark is not complete, or is imperfectly made, the inking and stamping with that letter or figure may be repeated, and the manipulator, on account ofthe skeleton form of the stamp, is able to place it in precisely the same spot any number of times withoutany danger of causing blots, which is altogether unavoidable in the use of the wooden or block stamps ordinarily used for such purposes. A
, What I' claim as my invention, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an improved article of manufacture, the metallic skeleton marking stamps, constructed as and for-the purposes herein shown and described.
