W 7 I o iwrngys- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANNIE MESSENGER, OF SALTBURN, ENGLAND.
CHIMNEY-CLEAN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 606,567, dated June 28, 1898.
Application filed November 30, 1897. Serial No. 660,275. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.- Be it known that LANNIE MESSENGER, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Saltburn-by-the-Sea, in the county of York, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Sweeping Chimneys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable Others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to sweeping chimneys, and has for its object to effect this in an efficient and cleanly manner by means of a machine which is portable or fixed and capable 7 of being operated by the ordinary domestic servant.
be understood that my invention is not limited to the precise combination or arrangement of details therein shown,a s these can be modified into well-known equivalents in various ways.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view of a stove fitted with a machine constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view taken on line as as of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a corresponding front elevation thereof. Figs. 4 and 5 are sectional and plan views, respectively, of the top of the chimney-pot.
The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures. I
a is a flexible fire-resisting tensile appliance, such as wire rope, the length of which is not less than twice the height of the chimney, so that it canbe carried over a pulley b, placed as near as possible to the top of the chimney, to'be used for working a brush or brushes 0, attached to the wire rope, up and down the chimney in the manner required for cleaning the soot out. To effect this, both ends of the wire rope a are temporarily secured, as by shackles d d to the ends of two ropes e 6 which are secured to two drums f f or to different parts .of the same drum in such manner that when the drum or drums ff rotate one rope,e ,is paid out as the other, e, is drawn in. Other pulleys or rollers g g are placed in such relation to the operatingdrums f f that the ropes are guided by them into the line of pull which will conveniently work the brush or brushes 0 up and down. The operating-drums are rotated by means of the handle h,and all the moving parts, except the brush or brushes, are combined together as one apparatus, which is placed in position in front of the stove, which is then closed in by the supporting-framework of the apparatus. This supportingframework conveniently takes the form of a fiat surface or shutter 2' of a size to close in the whole front of the stove. A casing j projects outwardly therefrom for the accommodation of the operating-drums, above which is an opening is through the shutter to enable the operator to get access to the ropes and fix the brush or brushes ready for working, during which this opening is closed up to keep the soot out of the room. The brush or brushes move up or down as the handle h is turned one way or the other. This disturbs the soot, which falls down to the bottom of the chimney and preferably into a bag or receptacle Z, provided for the purpose. When the operation is completed, the ropes e e on the drums are detached from the wire ropes coin the chimney, which latter are lashed to a hook or staple m until required for the next sweeping out of the chimney.
I do not confine myself to the winding apparatus being portable. It may be arranged as a fixture in any convenient place or places in a stove. This arrangement is especially suitable for new stoves.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a machine for sweeping chimneys, the
fireplace and provided with a door, a casing brush attached by its handle to said rope or attached to said plate, an operating-handle chain, substantially as described. 10 supported thereon, a drum journaled in said In testimony whereof I have affixed my sigcasing, guide-pulleys also journaled in said nature in presence of two Witnesses.
5 casing", a guide-pulley fastened to the top of ANNIE MESSENGER.
the chimney, a rope or chain with its ends \Vitnesses: wound in opposite directions on said drum GEORGE JAMES CLARKSON,
and passing over said guide-pulleys and a HENRY MESSENGER.
