SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 611,596, dated October 4, 1.898. Application filed April 24, 1 896. Renewed June 9, 1898. Serial No. 683,038' (N0 modeL) To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN M. ANCK, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Garinent-Supporters,which improvement is fully set forth in the following speciiication and accompanying drawings.

My invention consists of a novel construction of a garment-supporter which serves to effectively retain the pin thereof in locked position and guard the point thereof.

It further consists of novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

Figure l represents a perspective view of agarment-supporter embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents an elevation thereof, showing also the lower portion of a shirt-waist or other garment and the upper portion of a skirt to which the supporter is applied. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation of the supporter, on an enlarged scale,in open-position. Fig. 4 represents a section on line @c 0c, Fig. l, on an enlarged scale, the supporter being open. Fig. 5 represents a perspective view of a guard employed. Fig. G represents a rear view of the supporter. Fig. 7 represents a side elevation of the supporter in closed position.

Referring to the drawings, A B designate a belt or band,which is provided with a buckle B of any suitable or convenient description and has secured to it the supporting devices C,which are shown as three in number, although a greater or less number may be einployed, according to requirements. Each of said supporting devices consists of the back attaching-plate D, the elastic limb E, and the pin F, which has journals J, whose bearings K are on the limb E, the latter being provided with the recess II, through which projects the heel G of the pin, said heel bearing against the back plate D and being subjected to pressure owing to the elastic nature of the limb E, whereby the hook will be held iirmly, especially when in closed position, in which case its point F rests in proximity to the top of the limb E. In order that the point F' may be positively held in locked position and rendered less liable to be engaged with the apparel or hands of the wearer, I provide the same with a guard P, the same consisting of the bar Q, which has a slot R therein, the upper member S, which is deiiected at an angle thereto, and the extremity or lip T, said member S being provided with a slot U, in which the point F is adapted to rest when the pin F is in closed position.

V designates a tongue which is pressed out or otherwise secured to the back member D, the same entering the slot R, as will be understood from Figs. 4 and 6.

W designates a slot in the upper portion of the bend of the plate D and limb E, the same having the bar Q of the guard P passing therethrough.

The operation is as follows: The belt is applied to the person and secured, and the pins F are opened and inserted through the waistband L of the skirt N, after which said pins are turned into the position seen. in Figs. 1, 2, and '7, the elastic limb E bearing against the heel G, as has` been stated, and thereby locking the hook and preventing disengagement of the hook or the skirt-band therefrom. When the guard is primarily inserted through the slot W and pushed past the tongue V, the latter yields and then springs out, entering the slot R, so as to hold the guard in place. When the pin is open, the guard assumes the position seen in full lines in Figs. 3 and 4, the same` being readily movable, since the pin has caused the heel G to slight-ly expand the members D and E,it being further noted that when the pin is open the guard is positively held in elevated position by the action of lthe tongue V, with which it engages. When the hook is in closed position, as seen in Fig. 7 and in dotted lines in Fig. 3, the member S is caused to lock and protect the end of the pin, the guard being prevented from displacement in inward or downward direction by its contact with the heel G.

Having thus described my invention,what

I claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. A supporting device consisting of an at IOO taching-plate having an elastic limb, and a pin journaled in said limb and provided with a heel adapted to be held in positionl between the said plate and limb, in combination with a sliding guard supported upon said plate and having a member which is adapted to lock the extremity of said pin when the latter is in closed position, said guard having a slotted end, the latter being engaged by a portion of said plate.

2. In a garment-supporter, a supporting device, composed of a plate provided with an elastic limb integral with the upper end of said plate, and depending therefrom across the face thereof, the lower end of said limb having journal-bearings thereon, and open-V ings therein between the said bearings, and a pin with journals mounted in said bearings, and having a heel passed through said opening and in contact with said plate, said pin being adapted to bear backwardly against said limb, in combination with a guard adapted to lock the free end of said pin when the latter is in closed position.

3. A belt having thereon an attaching-plate with an elastic limb, a recess and bearings, a pin provided with journals mounted in said bearings, and a heel held between said plate and limb, in combination with a guard movably mounted upon said plate, said guard consisting of the slotted body portion having a laterally-extending slotted member and a lip, said guard being held in position by engagement with the pin when closed.

4. A belt having a pin mounted thereon adapted to engage the waistband of a skirt, and means for locking said pin in position, in combination with a guard for the free end of the latter, the same consisting of a recessed bar having a deiiected slotted member provided with a lip, with which member the free end of said hook is adapted to engage in closed position.

5. A plate having an elastic limb extending from one end thereof, a pin j ournaled in the free end of said limb, and provided with a heel adapted to pass through an opening in said limb and bear against said plate, and a slotted guard engaged by a tongue on said plate and provided with a slotted end adapted to receive the free end of the said pin.

6. A plate having an elastic limb, a pin journaled in said limb and a guard guided on said plate and projecting through the latter, said guard having at one extremity a slotted deiected lip for the reception of the free end of said pin, the other end of said guard being recessed and engaged by a portion of said plate.
