Description

No. 6I7,|05. Patented Jan. 3, "399. F. KOBTIGK.
PICK.
(Application filed Mar. 4, 1898.)
(No Model.)
llNirnn'STAins PATENT FRANK KORTIOK, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
PICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 617,105, dated January 3, 1899. Application filed March 4, 1898. erial No. 672,562. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK KORTICK, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Picks; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to a locking device for removable pick-points, for safety-hook attachments, and like devices.
It consists, essentially, of a head having a shank projecting essentially at right angles therewith, a tongue or yoke passing through the shank with the ends pressing upon the parts to be locked, and a removable key passing through the head and pressing upon the tongue or yoke to retain it in place.
It also consists in details of construction which will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front View of my pick. Fig. 2 is a lateral vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 shows the locking device attached to a hook.
A is the head, and B the shank, which is slotted parallel with the head, and when used for a pick is extended and made in two parts or socketed so as to receive the handle G, which is riveted or otherwise secured to the shank. The head A comprises two arms extending transversely across the end of the shank, so as to resemble the letter T. One or both ends of the head portion have grooves or channels made in them, as shown at D, and these are adapted to receive the shanks of the parts E to be locked which lie in these grooves or channels, extending interior to the parts of the head A, against which the outer faces of these shanks lie. The inner ends of the parts E are beveled, as shown at e, and these beveled points are fitted into correspondingly-shaped sockets a, made just at the junction of the head A with the end of the shank B and extending into the sides of the shank, so that the points c When inserted into these sockets a will be prevented from any side motion, while that portion of the part E which passes through the channels D at the outer ends of the heads A will in the same manner be prevented from side movement. The part or parts E being inserted are secured in place by means of a curved yoke F, which passes through the shank B from side to side, and the ends rest against the inner faces of the parts E, so as to press them against the inner faces of the head A.
G is a key which is fitted into a key-slot I-I, made through the shank B at right angles with the position of the yoke F, and when this key has been driven into the slot it presses upon the arch of the yoke, thus :forc ing the ends strongly against the parts E and holding them firmly in place.
The locking of the inner ends 6 and the body of the part E by means of the channels D at the end of the head prevents any side movement, while the yoke keyed against the parts E holds them solidly against the head A, thus forming a very rigid and solid structure for use, While the parts are readily detached by simply driving out the key.
When employed for picks, it will be manifest that short or long points, sharp, chisel, shovel, or edge of any desired form for use with such an implement, may be introduced and locked to the head and as easily removed therefrom.
lVhen used in conjunction with a safetyhook, the outer end of the part E is made to press against the point of the hook H, and thus close the opening, so as to prevent the hook being disengaged from anything with which it may be connected.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combinationwith a head and shank one disposed substantially at right angles to the other, one of said parts having a socket and a guide or slot, a part to be located, passing through the guide and having an end fitted to the socket, a yoke passing through the said other part and bearing on the part to be locked at a point between the guide or slot and socket of the first-named part, and means for securing the yoke in place.
2. In a pick, a shank, a handle to which it is secured, a head formed with and extending transversely across the end of the shank having open grooves or slots made in the outer ends, V-shaped sockets made in the interior of the head and at its junction with the shank, separable pick-points having the inner ends tapered to fit the said sockets While the body portion passes through the exterior guides of the head, a curved yoke passin g through the shank with its ends pressing against the interior faces of the pick-points and a key and keyway through which it is driven to press against the central curvature of the yoke whereby the latter is forced against the pick-points to lock them in place.
3. A detachable locking device comprising a head and a slotted shank at right angles therewith, a part to be locked, one end of which engages the junction of the head and shank, and the other extends outwardly along the head, a yoke passing through the slotted I 5 shank with the end pressing upon the part to be locked, and a key passing through a slot in the shank transverse to the yoke and pressing thereon.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my 20 hand.
