A. L. BUZZARD. FRAME FOR DINING TABLE COVERS.
(Application filed June 8, 1898.)

NITF 2| ASENATII L. ISUZZARD,
OF LINTON, INDIANA.
FRAME FOR DINING-TABLE COVERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 618,221, dated January 24, 1899.
Application filed June 8, 1898. Serial No. 682,881. (No model.)
To all 1071,0727, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ASENATH L. BUZZARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Linton, in the county of Greene and State of Indiana, have invent-ed certain new and useful Improvements in Frames for Dining-Table Covers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereongvhich form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a portable device which is designed to be applied to dining tables temporarily when it is desired to spread a cover over the dishes and food placed upon the table; and it consists in an adjustable supporting-frame adapted to be supported by the table and whereon the cover may gracefully rest without being in contact with the dishes; and it further consists in the parts and combination and arrangement of parts, as will hereinafter be more fully described and claimed. v
My object is to provide a convenient appliance whereby a protecting-cover may be supported over the dishes of food, so as to prevent soiling of the cover through contact with the dishes and obviate the disadvantages arising from the practice of spreading a cover immediately over the contents of the top of the table. This is fully attained in my invention, which, furthermore, provides means whereby a neatly-arranged table may be maintained, and it is at the same time cheaply made and durable and economical in use.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a table having my device applied thereto and in position to receive a cover; Fig. 2, a top view of a supporting-post; Fig. 3, a fragmentary detail of a portion of a post and its clamp in a vertical central section; Fig. 4, a top view of the central support, and Fig. 5 a detail fragmentary view of a spreading arm. I
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures.
In the drawings, A designates a table the top of which as invariably constructed has an overreaching edge a, affording a convenient base, to which I attach suitable supporting-posts E in a convenient manner, so as to be readily removed at will and preferably by means of a spring-clamp G, formed integrally or attached to a socket F, in which the lower end of the post is secured by a screw it when a wooden post is employed, as is usual; but other fastening may be adopted when a metallic post is used. The spring-clamp bends down over the edge a and extends under the same and has a curved end 1) adapted to,
compensate for table-tops of various thicknesses. The upper end of each post is provided with a ring I, which may be swiveled to the post, and the top is preferably finished with a suitable ornament e, that shall not be liable to ofier an obstruction by catching the threads of a cover drawn over it.
The central or main support comprises a base 13, adapted to rest at any portion of the table-top, and suitable upright frame B, ter minating in a top 0, just below which is a flange D, provided with eyes cl, the whole being of a suitable ornamental design and may be arranged to combine a caster or a receptacle for fruit or flowers, as may be desired, as this may be suitably adapted to remain upon the table in further usefulness after the cover and other parts are removed.
The spreading arms J, whereby the cover may be intermediately supported, each have a hook on at each end thereof adapted to engage an eye d at one end and a ring I at the other end and are adjustable lengthwise, the most approved construction of which is that shown in Fig. 5, in which rods J 3 slide in the bore 1?, of a tube J 2 at opposite ends and each having at the outer end a hook m. Both ends of the tube are tapering at the outside and have screw-threads N and have a slit P, so that the end may be compressed to bind the rods J A cap L, having a central opening it to admit the rod J is provided with screw-threads U, out in a tapering interior and adapted to engage the end of the tube and compress it. The exterior of the cap is preferably knurled, or it may have suitable finger projections.
The simplicity of this device permits of ready application and removal in use, and its utility and convenience will be apparent. In
the details of construction it is subject to minor variations within the scope of my invention, as will be obvious.
Having thus described my invention, what 5 I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a dining-table, of the caster provided with a flange at the upper portion thereof and having eyes therein, the IO posts adapted to be attached to the edge of the top of said table and having each a ring at the top thereof, and the extensible arnis engaging said eyes and said rings whereby said caster and said posts are detachably connected, substantially as and for the purposes shown and described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses. v y y ASENATH L. BUZZARD; \Vitnesses:
