T0 ALL WHOM '.['.l.v MAY CONCERN: t u
Be it known that l', PIERRE Mi C, BZIEL, of Paris, in the Empire of.-F-rance, have invented a new and useful` Improvementjn the Manufacture of Chains, Bracelets, and other articles of jewelry; and I do hereby `declare that the following is a Vfull and exact description thereof.
Thisinvention has for its object certain improvements in the manufacture offchains, bracelets, necklaces,
i' and other articles of jewelry. Iii-may also be applied with advantage inall cases where delicatenietal ornaments are required. This' will readily be understood from the following description of rny mode of'proce'eding. 'Having engraved a. suitable designV in two hollow dies or moulds, corresponding one with the other, and whose edges are properly lformed to cut out the edges'and openings of the patterns, I take a sheet o'ffdopper, or other equivalent malleable metal, soluble in acids, and place it ybetween two sheets of gold, whose` thickness, as also thatof the copper, is' determined'by the nature of the article'oii which it is to form` part. .The three sheets `thus arranged Aaire placed Ae een the dies, to which pressure is gradually applied until-they meet, and the -design',thus,cut out formed. Tllcpiecc. is .then-withdrawn, and.the.roughwedgesmootlxeddowneby suitable"V instruments until it husattained 'a suiiicicnt degree of finish. IV must here observe that when chains, bracelets,
. I eolrlccaror-sixnilar articles are to bemanut'aetured, thcldesign must be fof such a nature as will admit ofthe piece or linkformed in lthe moulds being readily and-elegantly joined by solder or otherwise to a similarpicce.
i Whenjthe article is so completed, the chain, 'or whatever it may be, is,` subjected `to ainitrie acid'batli,",which y.dissolves out the copper, leaving the gold intact. .In-some cases it may be desirable to have a half-design; by this I mean oneluncomplemented by its fellow. In such a case I make useof one sheet of gold and one of cop-` per, `treating"them, however, as before, except that one die only is sunk, the only dili'erence being, in one case y'the model has a solid* appearance, in the other the model'is in relief only on one side. The chief feature of my invention, therefore, consists in ystamping or cutting out, and forming by pressure iusuitable dies, `with the `aid of V a relief Vplateof malleablemetal soluble iuacidor otherwise, the links, leaves, or 'other models suitable for ,manufacture into` chains, bracelets, and all `such similar articles, whether'for u'se or ornament. In some cases, and for a particular class' of ornament, I make use of a wire of copper, or other equivalent malleable metal soluble by acid, in place of the sheetof'copper before alluded. to. This I coverwith gold leaf, the copper being employdsimply `to give suicient solidity to admit ofthe gold leaf bearingthe pressure 'towliich't is subjected indeed vany form to suit the purpose and ornamenttobe manufactured therefrom, and `may be either retainedfin ,its casing ofgold, or be dissolved out by` nit-ric acid. In this latter case small holes are made'in the gold casing .to 'allbwthe acid to reach the copper.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new,` and desire `to secure by'Letters Patentha The method, substantially as herein set forth, fof forming links, leaves, or other similar articles, `of gold or silver, for ornamental or useil purposes. a v i i f Initestmony whereof I have hereunto set my nainefin the presence'of two subscribin'gwitnesses.`
' V P. M.` C. BZIEL. i
