NITED. STATES DAVID M. WAUGH, OF COLLINS, INDIANA.
FARM- GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Lettis Patent No. 622,302, dated April 4, 1899.
Application filed October 24,1898. Serial No. 694,378. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LDAVID M. WAUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Collins,
in the county of Whitley and State of Indiana,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Farm-Gates; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in farm-gates wherein a sliding gate is mounted upon a wheel; and the object of my improveresponding parts throughout the views, and,
referring now to said numerals, 1 is the fencepost, and 2 is the gate. Hangers 6 6 are driven into the post 1 one above the other and serve as a mount for the respective ends of the bail 7, which swings freely upon said hangers. The grooved wheel 5 is mounted upon the lower horizontal arm of said bail and fits loosely between the rails 3 3 of the gate 2.
Upon the inner side of the post 1 is pivoted the latch 8, which is adapted to engage the upper arm of the bail 7 and hold it in position against the face of said post. At the middle of the gate is secured a vertical bar 9, and from this bar projects the releasing-pin 4, which is adapted to engage and lift the latch 8 from engagement with the bail 7, and thus allow the bail and wheel to swing laterally with the gate.
In operation the gate is drawn backward longitudinally until the latch is lifted by the pin, and then the gate, together with the wheel and bail, may swing laterally upon the hangers 6 6.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a gate, the combination of a swinging bail supporting a wheel; a gate having longitudinal rails mounted astride said wheel; a latch for engaging said bail; and means in connection with said gate for disengaging said latch, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I 21.1%; my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID M. VVAUGI-I.
