Be it known that I, EUGEN A. BoriNGnn, a
citizen of the United States, residing at New tachment which can be placed over the keyboard of a type-writer machine or other keyoperated instrument whereby messages may be written in cipher in the ordinary text by the operator of lthe machine, which message or commu nication can be retranslated into the original text on another type-writer or keyoperatcd instrument in possession of the receiver.
The object of the present invention is to provide means for the adjustment of the keys or linger-pieces of the ci phograph so that they can be arranged to act upon the keys of a type-writer or other key-operated instrument no matter what be the disposition of thekeys of the latter.
The invention consists of a ciphograph attachment for key-operated instruments which comprises a suitable rigid frame adapted to be supported above the keyboard of such keyoperated instrnments,laterally-shiftable auxiliary keys or finger-pieces movable to and from each other, and means for adjusting and setting said auxiliary keys or linger-pieces in position according to the diagram of the keyboard.
The invention also consists of certain other features of construction and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and then claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of my improved ciphograph attachment shown mounted on the keyboard of a type-writing machine. Fig. 2 is avertical transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the ciphograph. Fig. 4c is a transverse section through the side rails of the machine, showing also one of the shiftable supporting-bars. Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are sectional and perspective details of the different parts of the shiftable supportingbars, showing how the guide-blocks for the Shanks of the auxiliary keys or linger-pieces are adjusted. Figs. 8, 9, and l0 are plan and sectional views showing more clearly the construction of the guide-blocks for the auxiliary keys or finger-pieces.

Referring to the drawings, A indicates the keyboard of asuitable type-writing machine, provided with ordinary keys a.
B indicates the main frame of the ciphograph attachment, which is applied over the keyboard of the type-writing machine and which is provided with depending legs b,which are longitudinally slotted at b' to receive setscrews b2, whereby the said main frame is adj ustably connected as to its vertical movement with the uprights or standards C, which are secured by bolts and nuts C to the main frame of the type-writing or other machine, as shown. The main frame B is provided at its upper part at opposite sides with side rails D, which are provided with longitudinal slots CZ.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 2, 4f, and 6, E indicates the transverse supports, one for each row of auxiliary keys or fingerpieces, each support E being composed of a back bar e, provided with end plates e', and a front bar e2, which is hinged to the end plates at e3. From the end plates c threaded studs e4 proj ect,which pass through the longitudinal guide slots o'r ways d of the rails D and on which nuts e5 are screwed, so as to secure the key-supports E at any suitable point along said rails. The rails D are, as clearly shown in Fig. 4, channeled, so as to receive the end pieces or plates e'. Any 4suitable number of these transverse key-supports E are provided, according to the number of rows of keys or finger-pieces with which it is desired to equip the apparatus.

opening is formed, in which the flat shanks g of the auxiliary keys or finger-pieces Gare guided.
The guide-block section F is provided with a spring-tongue t, which engages over the upper edge ofthe back bar e of the key-supports E, whereby the same is hung thereon, so as to permit the Said section F to be slidaalong said bar e. The shanks of the auxiliary keys or linger-pieces are retained in the guide-openings in the guide-blocks F by means of the movable clamping-bar e2, which presses the movable section F? of the guide-blocks against the other section F. The guide-blocks F are lock'ed into position and may be set or adjusted longitudinally of the key-supports by means of the spring-clamp 71, which is bent upfrom Wire and Which is hinged at 71,' to the vclamping-bar e2, so that its opposite bent end h2 can engage over the back bar e and enter a suitable recess e6 in said bar e. The adjacent -faces of the removable sections l?2 ofthe lguide-blocks and the clamping-bar e2 are toothed or serrated., as shown, so that a iine .adjustment may be obtained, and when the clamping-bar e2 is locked into position by means of the clamp or fastening device 7i the guide-blocks are firmly locked so that they cannot be shifted longitudinally along the key-supports.
The auxiliary keys or finger-pieces are adjusted according to the diagram of vthe key- `board of the type-Writing or other key-operated machine by first adjusting the gangs or rows of auxiliary keys or finger-pieces, Which is accomplished by loosening the nuts e5, shifting the key-supports along to the desired position, and then again tightening up the nuts against the rails I). The individual adjustment of the keys orfinger-pieces relatively to their key-supports is accomplished by unlocking .the clamping-bar e2, then resetting the guide-blocks for the shanks of the auxiliarykeys or finger-pieces, and then locking the clamping-bar e2 in position, as shown in Fig. 5. If itis desired to transpose the auxiliarykeys or finger-pieces as in my copending application, filed July 23, 1898, Serial No.
686,726, this can be accomplished by unlock- -of the machine.
It is evident that various changes in the construction of the parts of the attachment for accomplishing the various adjustments ,could be resorted to. by skilled mechanics Without' departing from the scope and spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters` Patent- 1. In a ciphograph, the combination, with a suitable rigid frame adapted to be supported above the keyboard of key-operated instruments, of laterally-shiftable auxiliary keys or linger-pieces movable to or from each other, and means for adjusting and setting said auxiliary keys or finger-pieces in position accordable to or from eachother, means for laterp ally adjusting said keys or finger-pieces relatively to the diagram of the keyboard, .and means for vertically adjusting the auxiliary keys oriinger-pieces according to the .height of the keys on the keyboard, substantiallyas set forth.
In a ciphograph, the combination, With a suitable rigid frame,adapted to be supported above the keyboard of key-.operated instrulments,fof auxiliary keys or finger-piecesadapt- -ed'to act on the keys of the keyboard, and
means for vertically adjusting and `setting said auxiliary keys or iinger-pieceshigher or lower according to the height of the 'keysof the instrument, substantially as set forth.
4. In a ciphograph, the combination, Vwith a suitable frame adapted to be 'supported above the keyboard of key-operated .instruments, and guide-rails on said frame, of transverse key supports arranged vbetween the guide-rails, means for adjusting the key-supports along the guide-rails, and auxiliary keys or finger-pieces, supported by the key-supports, substantially as set forth.
5. In a ciphograph, the combination, with a suitable frame, adapted to be supported above the keyboard of key-operated instruments, of a transverse.key-support supported -on said frame, auxiliary keys or finger-pieces,
and means for adjusting the auxiliary keys or finger-pieces to or from each other and longitudinally of said key-support, substantially as set forth.
6. In a ciphograph, the combination, with a suitable frame, adapted to be supported above the keyboard of key-operated instruments, of a transverse 4key-su pport arranged on said frame,laterally-shiftable guide-blocks, means for adjusting the guide-blocks .along said key-support, and auxiliary. keys or fingerpieces, the slianks of which are guided in said guide-blocks, substantiallyas set forth.
