IMPROVEMENT IN GATES.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY- CONCERN:

Be it known that I, SHERMAN E. ANTHONY, of S'tillwnter, Snratoga county, New York, have invented a. new and improved Gate; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

This invention relates to a new and improved gate, of that class which is constructed and arranged in such a manner as to slide longitudinally a certain distance, and there swing or turn entirely open. The object of the invention is to obtain' a gate of theclass specified, which may be opened and closed with greater'faeility than hitherto, and be stronger and more durable. -In the'accotnpanying sheet of drawings Figure 1 is a side] iew of my invention in a closedstate;

A represents a gate, composed of a series of horizontal slats, a, to which upright strips or battens c are nailed or otherwise attached at each side, and at correspondihg parts a strip or batten at one side of the gate, being in line wither directly opposite to a strip or batten at the other side, as shown in fig. 2. B B are the gate-posts, between which is opening or space the gate closes, and C is a horizontal slat or bar, which is connectedby a hinge, d, to the post B, the hinge being aboutat the centre of theslat or bar. This slat or bar is fitted between the upperm ost slat a of the gate and the one underneath, and is between the strips or battens c of two pairs, and also between two short vertical strips e e, secured, one to each side of the gate, by the sides of the centralstrips or battehs, between which strips e a frictionroller,f, is placed to bear open the slat or bar O, as shown in fig. 1. The rear end of the slat or bar C has a notch, g, made in it to receive a fixed or stationary catch, D, attached to-apost, B, of the fence; the weight of the gate on the slat or bar C, when the former is in a closed state and hasithemajority of its weight nearlyall in the outer part of O, causing the catch D to be kept engaged'with C. Adjoining the notch g there is an oblong recess, 71, the use of which will presently .be shown, To the post 13, at .its lower part, there is attachedl-a horizontal curved rod, E, having an upright rod, 2', at its outer end. The outer end of the rod E is of curved or hook form, to receive, when the gate is shoved back on O in a partially open state, a vertical rod, j, between thetwo lower slats of the gate, as shown in red, fig. 1, the rear end of the upper' slat, or a strip underneath the same, at the same time dropping into recess in It will be seen that tho slat or bar 0 serves asa guide-rail for the gate A to slide on, and it also serves as a means whereby the gate is swung in an open and closed state; for, when the gate A is shoved fully back'on the bar 0, the weight of the gate will free the rear endof C from the fixed catch D, and the bar and gate are'then turned at right angles with the fence, as shown in black in fig. 2; and the gate, when shoved back on the [shit or bar 0, has a-tendency to swing open itself as the rod j leans against the outer end of the rod E out of a veitical line with the hinge clef the slat or bar 0; and the operation is precisely the same as the selfcleaning hinge attachments quite; commonly used on gates.
