Description

@with tant stent @fitte t IMPROVEMENT IN SKATES.
LA@It .rtgnnle rrfcttet tu in ilgrsc ifttns ntrut :nu mating putt nf its same,
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
De it known that I, JOHN HARTMAN, Jr., of the cityand county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania. have invented anew and useful Improvement in Skates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention and improvement consists in a novel mode of' adjusting and fastening the skate to the boot, which will be understood by the following description. In the accompanying drawings, which malte a part of this specification- Figure 1 is a top view or plan of the improved skate.
Figure 2 is Va. vertical longitudinal section of same.
Figure 3 is a View of the skateinverted.
Figures 4 and' 5 are a face and edge viewsv o'f the swivel clamping-plate F.
Fign'res 6 and 7 are similar,views of the supplementary plate D. I
Like letters in all the figures indicate the same parts of the improved skate.
A is the ruimer of the skate, which is secured to the sole B in the usual manner. C is the` front or tou strnp, to the upper side of which, bene-'ath the sole B, I attach a supplementary plate, D, which is provided with atightening screw, The said screw worksvin the boss a., and the pin b turns freely in the sole B, it being provided with a rivet-plate, c, asv seen in figs. l and 2. The said plate D is secured to the strap .C by means of the rivets d fl. 'lhe said strap may be buckled so as to allow the `too of the boot to be freely put in place and remain so, it being always tightened and loosened byoperating the set-screW'E bei'ore described. In tightening said stra-p the swivel-clamping plates F and F are borne against by the strap so :ts to bring their upper project-v ing ears e c and e' e on the heel and toe parts of' the plates to bear against the heel and sole of the boot, the .plates turning freely on the fulcrum-pin G, which isadjustable by means of the longitudinal slots f in the plates and sole B. Then the said. plates are eontined to the sole-so as to take the strain off of the strap C by means ,of the screws I-I H, which pass through the concentric slots g g. When the plates vare once adjusted so as to bring the runner A central with the foot, one of the screws H may remain tight. In the adjustment of the clamping-plates F and F the nut L on the fulcruln-pin G should be perfectly loose, so as to allow the pin to find its proper position in thedslots I is the heel-strap, constructed and arranged in the ordinary manner. I
Having thus described my improvement, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. 'Iightening the skate by means of a supplementary plate, D, operated by a screw, E, substantially in the manner above described. I l
2. The combination and arrangement of the swivel-clamping plates'F and F', with the sole B, b'y means of A the adjustable fulcrum-pin G, substantially in the manner and for the purpose above set forth.
In testimony that the above is my invention I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 29th day of September, 1866.l Y
