ATTACHMENT FOR BOOKTYPE-WRITERS.
SPECIFICATION forming pere ef Lettere Patent Ne. 651,766, dated June 1a, 1900.
Application tiled March l0, 1900. Serial No. 8.168. (No model.)
T0 a/ZZ whom. it may concern; f.
Be it known that I, JULIA K. MCDANIEL, residing at lVashington, in the District of Columbia, have made certain new andV useful Improvements in Attachments for Book Type-l/Vriters, of which the following isla specification.
My invention is an attachment for book type-writers, designed especially for use in connection with type-writers of the class employing a hinged platen which is adjustable vertically at its free end, which class of Vtypewriters is well represented by that known as the Elliottf da Hatch.
My invention has for an object to provide means for adj ustably supporting the free end of the platen, whereby it may be secured and supported at any desired height; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter describedand claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention'as in use. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a face view of the improvement, and Fig. 4 is a detail section illustrating the clamp for the link-bars.
The type-writer shown is of the type generally known as the Elliott &IIatch book typeewriter, including the platen A, which is hinged at A and has its opposite or free end adjustable vertically by swinging upon the hinge A. The hinged end A is also adjustable vertically, this vertical adjustment permitting the adaptation of the platen to any pages of a book.
By my invention I support the free end of the platen by means operating at or immediately adjacent to such end of the platen, so the spacebeneath the platen will be unobstructed. By this means the back of the book may lie. beneath the platen and upon the stand in the use of theinvention. This construction also permits the shifting of the book from side to side beneath the platen and avoids the lifting of the platen when it is desired to shift the book to write on one or the other side of the leaf in the operation of the type-writer.
` In carrying out my invention I provide what for convenience of reference I term a carrier, on which is mounted the verticallyadjustable su pporting device for .the freeend of the platen. This carrier is preferably adjustable longitudinally in suitable guides so it can be set with respect to the type-writer to adapt the support for books ot' different lengths, and in the specific construction shown the carrier consists of slides B and B in the `form of bars which are held and movable longitudinally in guides (5,.secured to the stand D, on which the type-writing machine is supported. The guides C are preferably secured to the under side of the stand D, so they will `not offer any obstruction to the free shifting of the book beneath the platen, as before described.
It is manifest that by means of the guides C the carrier may be readily adjusted with `respect to the stand in the use of the device .and can be conveniently removed from and `able devices for supporting the free end of the platen. As-shown in the accompanying drawings, these `adjustable supporting de-V vices comprise link-bars E and F, which are jointed at their ends E and F'n to the slides B 'and Bl, cross each other between their ends, where they are connected by an adjustable clamp, and support at their upper ends a top bar G, which underlies the free end of the platen and is preferably made in the angle form shown, thus providing a flange G,which is pivoted at G2 to the upper end of the bar F and is provided with a series of notches G3 to receive a suitable stud or portion E2 at the upper end of the link-bar E.
Slots e and f are formed longitudinally in the bars E and F for the play of the screw H', forming a part of the clamp H. The screw H has a head H2, which fits in a longitudinal rabbet c', formed on the inner side of the bar E, so the screw will be held from turning in all its adjustments, and the winged nut H3 may be operated to clamp the bars E and F tightly together in anydesired'adjustment. A
It is manifest that by raising and lowering the upper ends of the bars E and F and engaging the stud E2 in the proper one of the notches G3 the top bar G may be set to any desired position to properly support the platen. It will be noticed that the notches G3 are in- ICO clined slightly and ,that whenthe stud Effieends and having lon gitudin allvfextended slots held meneer .sain notches ann 'the' 1am-p u is tightened 'the'bar G will be 'loekedin en gagement withsaid stud and cannot be accidentally displaced.
In the operation of my invention'the bar G inlay-be adjusted, as fbefore described, to?? secure the platen atthe desired height, and the leaf which it is desiredto writeupon supported upon the platen, while the back of" the book underlying said leaf may rest beneath theplaten and upon .the stand.' *TheT stand may`be atable, as shown, or any othery suitable form of supporting-stand adapted z to carry the type-writer andthe platen-sup" porting devices, Vas before described. fHaving thus-described my invention, whats] Ifela'im, and desire to secure yby Le=ttersPatf en-fizs.. I i
