UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR S. HEINEMAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SKlRT-SUPPORTER.
SZBECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 651 ,814, dated June 12, 1900.
Application filed March 10,1900. Serial No. 8,238. (No model.)
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR S. HEINEMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State and has for its primary object to provide a skirt-supporter which will not tear the garment, as a shirt-waist or the like, to which a skirt is attached by means of said supporter and which receives the strain due to supporting said skirt.
To this end a skirt-supporter of my invention comprises the various features, combinations of features, and details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a view of my improved skirtsupporter, together with portions of a waist and skirt, showing the method of applying said supporter thereto. Fig. 2 is a side view of my improved supporter. Fig. 3 is a plan view thereof, showing in diagram the pin in position to be inserted through the fabric to which it is to be attached. Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a detail section on the line 5 5 of Fig. .2.
My improved skirt-supporter consists of a frame A, in which is formed a slot at, said slot being sufficiently wide to permit the convenient insertion therethrough of a fold of the fabric of which the garment to which said supporter is designed to be attached is made. In the preferable construction shown the frame A consists of a plate of suitable sheet metal; but my invention contemplates making it of other material, as wire or the like.
My improved skirt supporter also comprises a pin A, which is designed and adapted to be stuck through the goods, passed through the slot (1,, together with the goods folded thereover, and engaged with hooks a on the frame A at the upper side of the slot a, as clearly shown in Fig. 4, thus forming a fold of said fabric around the edge of said slot,
thus preventing slipping of the goods, when they are subjected to a strain, in the desired manner Preferably the edge of said slot over which the goods are drawn is relatively thick and is rounded, as shown at a thus effectually preventing cutting of said goods. The pin A is preferably hinged to the frame A at one end of the slot a and is hinged to said frame, so as to allow limited movement thereof transversely of said slot to provide for conveniently engaging said pin with the hook or hooks a after said pin has been inserted through the slot a. Asshown, said pin A is provided with a pivotpin a which engages a suitable socket formed in theframe A. To provide for the desired bodily movement of said pin A transversely of said slot at, the side of said socket is cut away, as shown at a. Preferably, also, said pin A is bent adjacent to its point of pivotal attachment to the frame A, as shown at a, thus preventing the fold of the goods from wedging between said pin and the upper edge of said slot, which would prevent or seriously interfere with the insertion of said pin and the goods folded over the same through said slot a. In the preferable construction shown, also, the slotais enlarged at its ends, as shown at a thus forming what may be termed finger-openings, through which the tips of the fingers may be inserted in order to force the pin A a sufficient distance through said slot a to enable it to be conveniently taken hold of to effect engagement thereof with the hook or hooks a.
The skirt may be secured to the frame A in any desired manner. As shown, headed pins a are secured to the skirt and are adapted to engage holes a in the supporter frame A, the upper ends of said holes being large enough to receive the heads of said pins, and the lower ends thereof being smaller than the heads of said pins, but sufficiently large to receive the shanks thereof.
I claiml. A skirt-supporter consisting of a slotted frame, a pin adapted to be inserted through said slot and a hook or hooks on said frame above the slot therein with which said pin is adapted to be engaged, substantially as described.
2. A skirt-supporter consisting of a slotted frame, a pin adapted to be inserted through said slot and a hook or hooks on said frame above the slot therein with which said pin is adapted to beengaged, the upper edge of said slot being thick and rounded, substantially as described.
3. A skirt-supporter consisting of a slotted frame, a pin adapted to be inserted through said slot, a hook or hooks on said frame, above the slot therein, with which said pin is adapted to be engaged and a finger hole or holes 2 in said frame formed by enlarged portions of the slot in said frame, substantially as de- 1 scribed,
4. A skirt-supporter consisting of a slotted frame, a pin adapted to be inserted through said slot, a hook or hooks on said frame, above 7 the slot therein, the upper edge of said slot being thick and rounded and a finger hole or holes in said frame formed by enlarged portions of the slot in said frame, substantially as described.
5. A skirt-supporter consisting of a slotted frame, a pin hinged to said frame and adapted to be swung through the slotin said frame and a hook or hooks on said frame, above the slot therein, with which said pin is adapted to be engaged, substantially as described.
6. A skirt-supporter consisting of a slotted frame, a pin hinged to said frame and adapted to be swung through the slot in said frame, the upper edge of said slot being. thick and rounded, and a hook or hooks on said frame,
above the slot therein, with which saidtpin is adapted to be engaged, substantially as described.
7. A skirt-supporter consisting of a slotted I frame, a pin hinged to said frame and adapted A to be swung through the slot in said frame, a
finger hole or holes in said frame formed by enlarged portions of the slot in said frame,
and a hook or hooks on said frame, above the slot therein, with which said pin is adapted to be engaged, substantially as described.
8. A skirt-supporter consisting of a slotted frame, apin hinged to said frame and adapted to be swung through the slot in said frame,
the upper edge of said slot being thick and rounded, a finger hole orholes in said frame formed by enlarged portions of the slot therein and a hook or hooks on said frame, above the slot therein, with which said pin is adapted to be engaged, substantially as described. 7 9. A skirt-supporter consisting of a slotted frame, apin hinged'to said frame and adapted to be swung through the slot therein said pin being bent adjacent to its hinged end to form a space between the bent portion thereof and 11. A skirt supporter consisting of a slotted frame, apin hinged to said frame and adapted to be swung through the slot therein, the hinge connection of said pin to said frame consistingof a pivot-pin fitted to a socket formed in the frame, the side of said socket being cut away to permit movement of said hinged pin transversely of said slot and ahook or hooks on said frame above said slot with which said hinged pin is adaptedto be engaged, substantially as described; I
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have hereunto set my hand this 8th day of March, 1900.
ARTHUR S. HEINEMAN.
