$PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 653,183, dated July 3, 1900. Application filed October 28, 1899. Serial No. 735,063. (No model.)

To alt whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. RAWSON, of Belleville, county of St. Clair, State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Chums, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improved device for supporting and manipulating a churn; and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a churn-body, preferably of. stone or earthenware. The churn is supported in a frame consisting of side pieces 2, a top piece 3, and a bottom piece 4, into which is halved a crossstrip 5, so that the upper faces of the bottom piece 4 and the cross-strip will be flush. The churn rests on the crossed bottom pieces 4 and 5 and is held from lateral movement by means of a central pin 6, fitting in the pieces and the upper end of which enters a recess 7, formed centrally in the bottom of the churn. The top piece 3 is secured to one of the side pieces 2 by means of a hinge.8, and it is provided centrally with a thumb-screw 9, the lower end of which seats in a socket-piece in the top of the churn. 11' represents straps pivoted at 12 to the other side piece 2, and in the upper end of which is journaled a levercam 13, which bears on the free end of the top piece.

To remove the churn, the cam 13 is thrown back from the position shown in Fig. I, and the straps 11 are turned back on their pivot 12, when the top piece 3 can be thrown over on its hinge 8, and when the churn is again placed inposition in the frame the top piece 3 is brought down into the position shown in Fig. I and the straps 11 broughtinto a vertical position and the cam 13 thrown over into the position shown in Fig. I, so that the churn can be readilyremoved and replaced and when in position is held firmly in the frame. The frame is provided with a gudgeon 14: on each Fig. III is a top side, one of the gudgeons being provided with a crank 15. The gudgeons fit in the sides of a folding supporting-frame 16. Each side of the supporting-frame consists of two members 17 18, pivoted together at 19 near their upperends, so that when the frame is opened out, as shown in Fig. II, the gudgeons 14 will fit in the frame above the pivots 19.

There is one of these straps for each side of the frame, and each strap is formed in two pieces hinged at-21, and the ends of each strap are pivoted to the legs 17 18, as shown at 22. end of one section of the strap is provided with a pin 23 to enter a notch 24 in the inner end of the other section of the strap. This manner of forming the braces and connecting them to the side legs of the frame permits the frame to be folded up when the churn is moved, so as to occupy no unnecessary space.

25 represents cross-strips extending across the frame 16 and connecting, respectively, the two legs 17 17 and 18 18 together.

26 represents a hook secured to the frame 16 and adapted to engage a staple in one of the side pieces 2 when it is desired to hold the churn from oscillation.

I claim as my invention A churn comprising a supporting-frame, a rotating churn-frame consisting of side pieces each having a gudgeon whereby it is journaled on the supportingframe, a bottom piece, a cross-strip, a top piece, a hinge e011- neeting the top piece with one of the' side pieces, hinged straps pivoted to the other side piece, and a lever-cam journaled in the hinged straps, and adapted to bear on the outer end of the top, a central pin fitting in the bottom piece and in the cross-strip, a churn-body having a central bottom recess adapted to receive the central pin and a cover having a socket-piece, and a screw working through the top piece and seatingin the socket 0f the cover of the churn-bod y; substantially as described. a I

Rawson, of Belleville, Illinois, for an improvement in Ohurns, errors appear requiring correction, as follows: In line 7, of the grant and in the printed head of the specification, it is stated that said Rawson assigned onethird to Bruce Rawson, whereas it should have been stated that he assigned one-half; and that the said Letters Patent should be read with these corrections therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Ofiice. I
