Be it known that I, Lsvnmf'r II. OLns'rnD, of the city o1 Newark, in the county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented an .Improvement in 'Lightening andl Loosening a Wheei en a Shaft; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the drawings that accompany this speeication, and make part of the saine.

The nature of my improvement consists in a provision for tightening and loosening a Wheel which operates from the centre of the shaft. In the drawings- Figure 1 represents the various part-s in their combination.

Figure 2 shows the screw, the taper-slide, and thc'blocks or pins.

In the cud of a shaft, A, a hole is bored to admit the tapering slide B. A-t the outer end of the hole a. thread is eut in the shaft suited to the screw y, which is unthe taperslide B. Near the extreme end of the taper-slide B a block or blocks or a pin or pins, X, are inserted into the shaftl A, th. outer ends of the blocks or pins being turned even with the surfacey oi' the shaft. The inner end is tapered to fit the taper-slide B. A turn of the screw y forces the pins or blocks X againstthe inner surface of the eye or hub of the wheel C, tightening or loosening it on the shaft A, as the case may require.

The combination and arrangement oft-heV slide B, screw y, and pin or hieek X, constructed and operating as described, for the purpose of tightening` or loosening wheels on shafts, as set forth.
