Description

N NE
TATES ,ATFENT OFFICE.
- DUPL X LABEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 654,545, dated July 24, 190(1). Application filed April 23, 1900. Serial No. 14,000. (No model.)
To all whom it nay concern:
Be it known that I, ALVA W. B. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Vernon, in the county of Jefferson and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Duplex Label, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a duplex label for original packages.
One object in view is to provide simple and effective means for keeping a record of goods sold, of the quantity and character of such goods, of the profit derived, the name, number, or other designation of the salesman, and of the business house of whom the goods were purchased, as well as of such other information as may be useful in connection with a business which involves the sale of goods of any character in original packages. A further object of the invention is to render it possible to keep a record of the character described without making an entry in a salesbook or upon a sales-recording device in accordance with systems at present in vogue. To these ends my invention consists in providing each original package or carton with a detachable stock check or ticket identified with the package by a suitable key and hearing a record of such significance as might be desirable in connection with the particular class of goods contained in the package.
The invention further consists in certain details of construction and arrangement which are subordinate to the essential characteristics already noted and which will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and defined in the appended claims.
Referring to said drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one end of a shoe carton, box, or package equipped with my duplex label and showing a fragment of the lid slightly elevated. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the box, showing the stock check or ticket removed. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view illustrating the manner of attaching the stock-check to the fixed label, and Fig. i is a detail view of the stock-check.
Referring to the numerals of reference designating corresponding partsand structural characteristics in the several views, 1 indicates a box, carton, or package of that class usually employed for shoes and designed, as usual, to be closed by a cover 2. Upon one end of the box I attach in any suitable manner what may be termed a duplex label, comprising the label proper or fixed member 3, which, as shown, may be pasted to the box and upon which are imprinted a key 4 and a general character-designation defining the nature of the contents-as, forinstance, Fine Shoes. The key at may be of any general nature, and its significance maybe varied to suit the purposes for which the package is intended. In the present instance the key 4 comprises lot and individual-package designations, as No. B 17,427, the significance of which is that the contents of the box are of lot 13 and that the number of the individual package of the lot is 17,427. The fixed member or label 3 is provided below the key or identifyin g-designation with a pair of parallel slits or elongated openings 5 and 6, between which is imprinted upon the fixed label certain information for the purchaser, as No shoes exchanged unless this box is returned, also other information respecting the contentsfor instance, Size 4. lVidth D. This matter between the slits is covered when the carton is in stock by the stock tag or ticket 7, which is retained upon the face of the fixed label 3 as, forinstance, by having its opposite ends passed into the slits 5 and G'ittlld under those portions of the fixed label lying immediately above and below them. The stock check or ticket is provided with the record which is intended to be kept, and upon it is also imprinted a key of identical significance with the keyupon the fixed label-to wit, No. B 17,427 -which when the check or ticket is detached evidences the fact that carton No. 17,427 of lot B has been sold. The record on the tag may be of any desired character-for instance, Salesmans No. Size 4%, Width D, Cost Bvf, Sell 250, Stock No. 3,752, John Doe 8t 00. of St. Louis. The last record-entry in this instance is the name of the manufacturer or jobber from whom the shoes were purchased and is intended to make it apparent that in order to replenish the stock an order must be given such house in accordance with the number of tickets which have been deposited with the cashier. It is evident of course, however, that the character of the record is not essential, since my duplexlabel or stock checking device is designed for. use in connection with any class of packages or receptacles, the .only essentials being that some means of identification be provided'in order to identify each stock-check with its package and that it shall bear a record significant with respect to the contents of the package and its disposition. Obviously the end of the box might be employed as the fixed label 3, and the stock check or ticket might be detachably retained thereby in any desired manner. I therefore desire it distinctly understood that I do not limit myself to the details of construction or arrangement herein shown and described, but that, on the contrary, I desire to reserve to myself the right to effect such changes, modifications, and variations of construction and arrangement as may hereafter appear expedient or desirable, so long as they are properly embraced within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A duplex label for original packages comprising a fixed label bearing a key and characters significant to the contents of the package, and a separate stock-check having a key corresponding to the key upon the label and bearing a record likewise significant to 0 the contents of the receptacle.
and a-separate stock-check retained by said 3. A duplex label comprising a main label, and a separate stock-check detachably retained upon the face of said main label.
4. A duplex label comprising a main label having a pair of slits, and a separate stockcheck having its opposite ends passed into said slits. 5. A duplex label for original packages comprising a fixed label bearing a key and characters significant to the contents of the package and applied to the outside of the package, and a stock-check having a key corresponding to the key upon the label and bearing a record likewise significant to the contents of the receptacle, the label and check being slidable one upon the other and interlocked, so that the characters on one are concealed by the other.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ALVA W. B. JOHNSON.
