Be it known tholt I, JAMES F. DRUMMOND, of the city, county, and State of New- York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Cans and Boxes for Holding Paint: and other materials; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the some, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, making a portion of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a vertical trnnsvcrse section of a can constructed according to my invention.

Figure 2 is a. detachedsection of a portion of the same on an enlarged scale.

Figure 3 is u similar'detached section showing the manner of opening the can.

This invention consists in u novel method of combining an air-tight cover with the body of n. sheet-metal can or box, whereby theoverlapping rim of the cover may be readily cut or severed as required in opening the box', but be left in such condition. that it may be afterwards used as a lid.

To enable others to understand the nature and construction of my invention, '1 will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.

The body of the can, which'may be of either square or cylindrical form, but preferably of the latter, is shown at A, and has' formed in it, at d short distance from the top thereof, on internal swa-ge, the outer or depressed side of'which forms a circumferential groove, 02, extending entirely around the said body. Formed upon this body A, below the groove c,just described, is an external circumferential swage, which forms an annular rib, marked 6 in the drawings. The cover B of the can or box may have its flat upper part a made of sheet metal, of the some thickness as that of which the body A is formed; but the downwardly-extending rim cl thereof, which is designed to fit upon and around that part of the body A, above the groove 0: thereof, when the can or box is closed, as shown in figs. 1 and 2, and which s indicated in red cblor in the drawings, should preferably be made of thinner metal, which may be cut with a. knife or equivalent implement with comparative case, and is of such width, or rather depth, that when the cover is placed upon the body A, as shown in figs. 1 and 2, the said rim will extend down past the groove a, with its lower edge resting upon the circumferential rib, the top or uppermost edge of the body A being at the same time brought in contact with the lot upper part c of the cover, to the end that the contents of the can or box mny in a great measure be prevented from getting between the rim 0? and the adjacent upper portion of the body A The cover being placed in this position, the joint between the lower .edgejust mentioned of the rim d and the upper side or surface of the rib bis closed or united by soldering, as represented at a, the said rib serving, as it were, to support the solder, thus facilitating the operation of soldering or securing the cover to the body of the can or box.

In order to open the can or box when thus closed, the point of a knife or other like cutting implement is forced through the thin sheet-metal rim d into the groove (1 of the body A, and the said knife or implement is I then forced around the can orbox cutting the rim (1 in its passage, and its point-being guided by the groove a along or in with it, the said point passes-while the rim is being thus out. The thin metal rim being thus divided throughout its entire circumference, as shown in fig.,3, the cover may be drawn upward and removed from the body. The groove a not only serves as a guide to the knife while cutting or dividing such rim, but greatly facilitates the operation of cuttin Inasmuch s the rim d is cut or divided at some distance from the upper edge thereof, the cover B may be usedin the samc manner as an ordinary cover to temporarily close the can or hour when desired.
