Application illed October 27, 1899. Serial llo. 73ll,945 (No model.)
To'aZZ wtont it may concer-m i Be it known that I, RALPH B. COFEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chattanooga, in the c ountyof Hamilton audtate of Tennessee,- have invented certain netaagnd useful Improvement-sin TNashboar-tls, of`
which the following isfaspecitication.
The obj ectfsof this invention are topro'vide a strong and-durable was'lviboard and-to increase the efficiency of therufleiugsurface.-
I accomplish thejgobjects eiifthe invention by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a front elevation, slightly in perspective, of my invention with' certain parts broken away to make the construction lclearer; and Fig. 2, la section on the dotted line 2 2 of Fig. l. l x
Liletletters of referenceiudretelim parte throughout both views of the drawings.
A A arethe sides of the board, which tend down .belowthe rubbing-surface to orin legs in the usual manner. piece at the top, and B the back of the board, which is in one piece, extending from the top A to the lower edge of the rubbing area. 4 At a suitable distance below the top A. to provide the usual soap-receptacle is 'the crossu bar C, which has an over-hanging flange e' along its outer lower edge, and at the lower edge of the back B isa strip D to form a shelf, which is covered on the front and bottom by the angle-plated, the front member of which V plate extends beyond-the top of the .shelf to form a seat.
E are a series of rods or tubes, preferably of metal, the lower ends of which rest on the shelf D in the seat or Way formed by the upward extension of the angle-plate, and the upper ends of the reds are dropped behind the lange or curtain o' under the bar C in' as the pressure isreleasedftlije'return move- A' is .the crossment of the springs co? .ributes an additional *rubbing movement to assis-t in. reieasingthe dirt in the clothes.
It will be noted that the direction oit the coil of the spring en each rod is in the oppo site direction from 'that on the next preceding l and following one. With the coils all in one e direction the tendency of the clothes would be to slide toward 'one side of the board, but by alternating the coils the sli-ding tendency Sil y is equalized. f
The kbar C will preferably be attacliil with 6 screws, AvbeeJle-iteau be easily removed to asserniote tiefds. ortolesiable them to bei rotatedinlordergtobring4 `nivorn portions of .thef'springsfin-to Userland' thereby equalize the'wear and-lengthen :tlfreiite- -ofvjthe board, or tor'removethe rodsaud springs'or. the purpose "of cleantug;l them 'andthe be Rotation of the rods and springs will bei vented by screwing 'the bar C down with sur? ticient force to clamp the ends of said rods @f5 or springs against the back B.
Above the bar C the holes b through the back will be made for the purpose of draining the water away from the soap.,
A solid Onapiece back provides a board which is quicker to malte, and more solid and more substantial and lasting than if made out of seva-ral pieces.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-M f l. In a washboard, a rubbing-surface coinn 'prising a series of' rods each having.;` a 'wire Wound..spiraliy around from end to end of the rod, the direction of the wind of thewire` 9o on each rod bein g opposite fixen that on the next preceding or following one, substantially as described and shown.
v in a washboart'l, the combination with. a frame and one-piece back, of a plurality of spiral Wire springs, rods passing through the springs and removable fastenings for the rods and springs, as and for the purposes specified.
In Witness whereof I have hereuntoset my hand and seal at Chattanooga, Tennessee, H00
