UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED M. INGERSOLL, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA.
SAN D-BAN D.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 657,542, dated September 11, 1900.
Application filed October 24, 1899. Serial No. 734,617. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
/ Be it known that I, ALFRED M. INGERSOLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sand-Bands; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
7 clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for excluding dirt from between the axles of vehicles and the axle-boxes, which are technically known as sand-bands.
The object of the improvements is to provide a device of this character that can be cheaply made, easily and quickly applied to axles and hubs of common forms, that will permit the removal of the wheel from the axle for the purpose of oiling with the minimum amount of trouble, and that when applied will effectually exclude sand and other forms of dirt and at the same time prevent the oil from escaping from the axle.
The construction, arrangement, and operation of my improved sand-band areillustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application, andin which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a portion of an axle, a hub applied thereto, and of my invention. Fig. 2 shows my invention in elevation. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through a threaded and flanged collar which forms a part of my invention. Fig. 4 is a vertical section through a screw-cap which forms a part of my improved sandband, and Fig. 5 is an elevation of one of the halves of a sectional collar which is applied to the squared portion of the axle in my invention.-
In the accompanyingdrawings, frepresen ts a squared axle of common form, g the round and tapering spindle on the end of the axle, and g the annular flange or dust-collar between the spindle and the axle, all of said parts being made integrally in the usual manner.
The inner end portion of a hub is represented by h, and interposed between the hub and the axle is the axle-box h, said hub and box having the form common to such devices. In carrying out my invention I provide a metal collar (2, which is made in two semicir end of the hub h, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
Surrounding the collar 0 is a cap (I, which is annularly and interiorly threaded to engage the threads on said collar and is formed with a flange d at right angles with the threaded portion and with a central opening (Z through which the lugs a on the collare project when the device is in position.
When the device is applied in the manner shown in Fig. 1, it will be observed that a joint having two right angles is formed between the axle and the contiguous parts of the sand-band and the hub, thus practically excluding dust and confining the oil. It will also be noted that in order to remove the wheel from the axle it is only necessary to unscrew the cap d to release the wheel from the sand-band.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a device of the character described, the combination of a collar 6 formed in sections adapted to be secured about the squared portion of an axle, a threaded collar surrounding said first-named collar, means for securing said threaded collar 0 to a hub, and the threaded cap cl, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
