To call w/tmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, NAPOLEON DUSSAULT, a subject of Her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain, residing in the city and district of Montreal, Province of Quebec, Ganada,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand Lasting-Tools; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Thisinvention relates to hand lasting-tools; and its object is to provide a tool of this character which is simple in'construction, of few parts, effective in operation, and which may be manufactured at a modern cost.
To these ends the invention consists in a hand lasting-tool constructed substantially as hereinafter illustrated and described, and defined in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a View in perspective of a hand lasting-tool constructed in accordance with this invention; Fig. 2 is an elevation thereof, the parts being in the position assumed prior to driving the nail. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the opposite side of the tool. Fig. 4 is a View similar to Fig. 2, parts being shown in section to show the construction. Fig. 5 is a view, partially in section, showing the position assumed by the parts when the nail is driven and out. Figs. 6 and 7 are views in perspective of the operating lever-handles. Figs. 8, 9, 10, and 11 are views in perspective of details of construction.
Hand lasting-tools as heretofore constructed have generally been very complicated,comprising many parts and entailing great expense in their manufacture. In the type shown in the patent to Frchette, No. 594,241, on which this invention is an improvement, not only are the objections above noted apparent, but there exists the further objection that in the event of the nail being broken or of failure to be properly fed to the plunger it is necessary to take the tool apart in order to bring the nails down into their operative position, thus necessitating a serious loss of time and involving considerable trouble and inconvenience. In the tool about to be described all of these defects and objections are obviated and a hand lasting-tool provided which, in the event of the failure of the nails to be properly fed to the plunger or of breakage of the same, does not need to be taken which is formed an opening at, extending therethrough from top to bottom.
In the upper portion of the frame A is fixed a plug a, which has its sides inclined from top to bottom and is provided in its upper portion with a passage-Way a for the nails, as clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 5, said passage-way being exposed on o'ne side for substantially its entire length. The passage-way a communicates with the opening a, and a suitable leafspring a is secured to the upper portion of the plug a and bears at its lower portion against the inclined side of said plug.
The outer portion of the frame A is provided with an upwardly-extending lug a to the upper portion of which are pivoted the bifurcated arms d of a hand-lever D. To the arms (1 of the lever D is pivoted the plunger D, the lower end of which is split, forming the spring-clamp d, which is provided with .a suitable binding-screw. A threaded perforation d is formed in the lower portion of the plunger D and communicates with open-sided channels (1 formed upon the adjacent faces :of the clamp d. is threaded in the perforation d and is seated A feed-rod or nail-driver D in the grooves d the lower end of said feedrod projecting beyond the edge of the plunger D and extending into the opening-a of the frame A The extremity of the feed-rod D is suitably sharpened for cuttingoff. the nails.
In the body portion of the plunger D is formed an opening (1, which is enlarged at its lower portion, forming the inclined side or cam-surface (:1 which serves as a bearingsurface against which the friction-roller e of the guiding-bracket E engages. The bracket E is constructed with the spaced sides e, between which the roller 6 is journaled. The sides 6 of the bracket E embrace the sides of the frame A and are rigidly secured thereto by suitable screws threaded'into the sides of the frameand the u pper portion of the jaw A A suitable spring D is secured at its lower end to the plunger D and at its upper end to the lug a, which tends to retract the plunger when it is released from pressure and alsoholds the feed-rod in proper position relative to the opening a of the frame A If desired, a spring D may be provided upon each side of the frame. A suitable spring D may be employed to open the jaws A B The lever A is provided at a suitable point on its upper side with a lugf, to which is rotatably secured a reel F. The lasting-nails f are formed continuous with each other and are wound upon the reel F.
In operating the improved lasting device above described the lasting-nails are passed through the perforation in the plug ct and down between the inclined sides thereof and the leaf-springe whereby the nails are held in their operative position ready to be fed to the work. The nails are then passed down through the opening a of the frame A between the point of the feed-rod D and the inner face of the jaw A as clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The parts are now in the position shown in Fig. 4, and the tool is ready for operation. The lever-handles A and B are grasped with one hand and the jaws A and B closed upon the work. The hand-lever D is then forced downwardly, and the sharp point of the feed-rod engages the nail just back of the head and forces the same into the work. As the plunger descends the frictionroller 6 of the bracket E rides against the cam-surface d of the opening d and draws the plunger D, and with it the feed-rod D with increasing force toward the frame A until at the end of the stroke the cuttingpoint of the feed-rod severs the lasting-nail, which has been driven up to its head in the work, the parts assuming the position shown in Fig. 5. Upon releasing the hand-lever D the plunger is returned to the position shown in Fig. 4 by means of the spring D the point of the feed-rod sliding back above the headof the next nail to be driven. A suitable stopplate A is pivoted to the frame A and adapted to engage alug on the hand-lever D to lock the parts in their raised position when desired.
By providing the stop-plate A the feeding mechanism may be positively held from move ment, enabling the levers A and B, with their gripping-jaws, to perform the function of the ordinary lasting-pincers, in addition to which the tendency of injuring the mechanism, if it is desired to use the head I) as a hammer, is eliminated.
As shown, the plunger D is mounted at a relative movement of the cam-surface and the guide serve to impart a movement to said plunger at the time when the severing takes place, which carries the feed-rod or naildriver across the path of movement of the nail-strip in a diagonal or oblique direction and with increasing force, which not only severs the nail, but has a tendency to form a somewhat sharpened edge on the succeeding nail. Having this movement and obtaining a double result thereby, I provide the feedear, which is removable and adjustable, and secure it in such a manner that the pressure applied by the hand-lever D is exerted in the direction of-its longitudinal center, in a manner similar to a chisel, in contradistinction to a cutting feed-bar, in which the cuttingpoint moves in a direction substantially at right angles to its longitudinal center, the pressure in the latter case being borne by one end of the feed-bar. In other words, I secu re the feed-bar in the plunger at an angle which is substantially the same as the angle through which the feed-bar travels during the severing operation.
By the use of the removable and adjustable feed-bar arranged in the manner described I am able to construct it of light weight, as well as small, without loss of strength, in addition to which the cuttingpoint can be readily sharpened.
By forming the passage-way for the nailstrip substantially open sided there is no necessity of taking the device apart in case trouble should arise during the passage of the nail-strip thcrethrough.
It will be seen from the construction above described that if a nail breaks oif above the feed-rod it is only necessary to again raise the plunger to its full height, whereupon the feed-rod will engage and drive down the next nail, or if a defective nail is engaged it is only necessary to operate the hand-lever and cut it off until a perfect nail is reached. Hence it will be seen it is never necessary to remove the parts of the tool to insure the proper feeding of the nails or remove broken or bent nails.
While I have herein shown a preferred form of carrying my invention into efiect, yet I do not desire to limit myself to such preferred details of construction, but claim the right to use any and all modifications thereof which will serve to carry into effect the objects to be attained by this invention in so far as such modifications and changes may fall within the spirit and scope of my said invention.
I claim 1. A hand lasting-tool comprising two pivotallyconnected levers having gripping jaws; a frame carried by one of said levers; a hand-lever pivotally connected thereto; a nail driving and severing plunger pivotally connected to said hand-lever, said plunger having acam-surface and ast-ationary guide point to one side of the frame A and the carried by said frame against which said surface is adapted to ride during the movement of said hand-lever, whereby said plunger will be caused to be positively forced toward said frame.
2. A hand lasting-tool comprising two pivotally connected levers having grippingjaws; a framecarried by one of said levers, said frame havinga passage-way for. the nailstrip, said passage-way beingexposed for su bstantially its entire length; a hand-lever pivoted to said frame; a nail driving and severing plunger pivot ally connected to said hand: lever; and means for positively forcing said plunger toward said frame, substantially as described.
3. In a lasting-tool, the combination with two pivoted levers provided with jaws; of a hand-lever pivoted to one of said levers, a nail-driving plunger pivoted to said hand-lever and provided with an opening having an inclined side; a feeding and cutting rod mounted in said plunger; a bracket fixed upon one of said pivoted levers and having a friction-roller adapted to engage said open: ing and bear against said inclined side, whereby the said plunger is forced toward and into the path of movement of the nail-strip during its downward movement, whereby the nail is driven to its seat and severed, substantially as described.
4. In a lasting-tool, the combination with two levers provided with jaws; of a frame fixed on the end of one of said levers, having an opening therethrough; a plug secured in said opening, having an orifice communicating with said opening for the passage of the nails; alug mounted on said frame; a handlever pivoted upon said lug; a plunger pivoted to said hand-lever; a feeding and cutting rod mounted in said plunger; and means for forcing the said plunger toward the said frame during its downward movement, whereby the nail is driven to its seat and severed, substantially as described. 7
5. The combination witha hand lastingtool having a reciprocating nail-driver; and a hand-lever for imparting movement thereto; of a pivotally-mounied stop-plate adapted to lock said lever in an inoperative position.
6. In a hand lasting-tool, a plunger, having its lower end arranged at an angle to its longitudinal center, said end having a screwthreaded opening and also having a springclamp; and a cutting nail-driver having a portion of its length screw-threaded, removably and adjustably secured in said opening and clamp, substantiallyas described.
