Be it known that I, GEORGE BEsTER Mo- KINNEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Barry, in the county'of Pike and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stools, 'ofwliich the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates particularly to an improvement in the construction of dentists stools; and one purpose of the invention is to so construct the stool that it will have .a yielding or spring action laterally in any di-' rection, the spring-section permitting said action being a portion of the standard or upright of the stool.
It is a further purpose of the invention to provide means whereby the seat of the stool may be conveniently and expeditiously raised and lowered and held firmly in adjusted position..
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved stool, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section through the stool.
The standard or upright A is tubular and is provided with a coil-spring section B of any desired length, which coil-spring section B is attached to a suitable base 0 in any approved manner. As shown, the lower por tion of the coil B extends over and is attached to a stud 10, extending upward of the center of the base. The tubular or main section A of the upright or standard of the stool preferably enters the lower or spring section B at its upper end, and the upper portion of the spring-section of the standard may bev attached to the main section A, if desired; but the main section A of the standard is provided, preferably, with an exterior collar 11, which rests upon the spring-section B.
The main section A of the standard of the stool is provided upon its inner surface with teeth 12, in the form of a screw, the teeth being inclined in an upward direction, as shown in Fig. 2, and usually the entire innersurface of themain section A of the stool-standard is thus toothed or threaded. The seat 'D is provided with a bottom. chamber 13, as is also best shown in Fig. 2, and a tubular stem 14 is screwed or otherwise fastened to the bottom central portion of the seat D, which stem 14 is held to slide freely within the main portion A of the standard of the stool and may extend within the spring-section B, if desired. Where the tubular stem connects with the seat of the stool a shoulder 15 is preferably formed, which in the lower position of the seat rests upon the upper end of the main section A of the stool-standard.
' Opposing longitudinal slots 16 are made in the lower end portion of the tubular stem of the seat D, and a latch 17 has-horizontal movement in the said tubular stem of the seat, being adapted to extend. within or out through either of the slots 16, as shown in Fig. 2. This latch is provided at one of its side edges with teeth 18, adapted to lit. the teeth 12 in the main tubular section A of the standard of the stool, and the said latch 17 is also provided in each side with an inclined or diagonal slot 19, extending in direction of its upper and lower edges. The latch is manipulated through the medium of a rod 20, the lower end 21 whereof is flattened and passes through a slot made centrally and vertically in the latch, and the said flattened surface 21 ofthe rod 20 is provided with pins 22, which extend through the diagonal slots 19 in the latch. Thus when the rod 20 is drawn upward the pins 22 are made to travel upward also, and the toothed edge of the latch is then carried out of engagement with the teeth on the standard of the stool, and the stem connected with the seat may be raised or lowered, as desired.
The rod 20 may be manipulated in difierent Ways; but preferably it is controlled as shown in Fig. 2, wherein a springarm 23 is located in the chamber 13. in the bottom of the seat of the stool, and one end 24of this arm is attached to the bottom portion of the stool, while the other end extends out through an opening 26, made also in the bottom of the seat of the stool, and the outer end of the arm 23 usually terminates in a button 25.
' The rod :20 has a hinge connection with the central portion of the spring-arm 23.
It will be observed that owing to the coilsection in the standard of the stool the said standard may be inclined laterally in any y direction that. may be found advantageousto the occupant of the stool and that the stool may be quickly and conveniently adjusted as to height. Furthermore, the entire construction of the stool is not only durable, but simple, and the stool is in no manner rendered unsightly by the improvement.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A stool comprising a base having astud extending upward therefrom, a seat, a standard having a laterally-yielding lower coil- Spring section extending over the stud on the base and a rigid upper sect-ion fitting within the coil-spring section, substantially as described.
2. A stool comprising a base, a standard mounted on the base and havinga coil-spring section and a tubular rigid section fitting one within the other and a seat provided with a post having sliding movement in the standard, substantially as described.
A stool comprising a base, a standard or upright having a lower coil-spring section attached to the base, and an upper rigid tubular section adapted to enter the upper end of the coil-spring section, the said upper section being provided neat-its lower end with an external collar adapted to rest on the upper end of the coil-spring section, and a seat provided with a stem fitting within the said standard, substantialh as described.
I. In a stool, a base having a stud extending upward therefrom, a standard comprising a tubular rigid section, and a coil-spring section extending over and attached to the said stud on the base,the tubular rigid section having interiorly-located teeth, a seat having a chamber in its lower portion extending from side to side, a post for the seat having sliding movement in the standard, a latch having teeth arranged for engagement with the teeth in the standard, an arm located in the chamberof the seat and secured at one end to the bottom of the seat, the other end of said arm extending out through an opening in the bottom of the seat and a rod connecting said arm with the said latclt,suhstan tially as described.
5. In a stool, a base, a standard comprising a tubular rigid section, and a coil-spring section, the tubular rigid section having interiorly-located teeth, a seat having a bottom chamber, a hollow post for the seat having sliding movement in the standard, the said post having opposing slots, a latch having horizontal movement in the said post and adapted to extend within the post or out through either of the slots, the said latch being provided atone of its side edges with teeth adapted to [it the teeth of the standard, the said latch being also provided in each side with a diagonally-arranged slot extending in direction of its upper and lower edges, a rod having a flattened lower end extending through a central vertical slot in the latch, the said flattened surface being provided with pins extending through the diagonal slots in the latch, a spring-arm located in the chamber in the bottom of the seatand secured at one end to the seat, the other end of said arm ext-ending out through an opening formed in the bottom of the seat, the upper end of the said rod having a hinge connection with the central portion of the spring-arm, for the purpose set forth.
6. A stool comprising a base, a tubular standard having a laterally-yielding section mounted on said base, a rigid section, fitting within the laterally-yielding section, and a seat provided with a post adjustably held in the said standard, substantially as described.
