SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 659,300, dated October 9, 1900. Application filed March 1900, Serial No. 6,915. (No modeli To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHESTER K. HANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Swings, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to the improvement of swings of that class which are adapted to be suspended from porch-ceilings and other desirable supports; and the objects of myinvention are to provide an improved swing of this class of superior construction and arrangement of parts which maybe folded into compact form when not in use, to so construct the same as to admit of the ready adjustment of the relative positions of the seat and back, and to otherwise produce an improved swing which will present a neat appearance and maybe readily swung from any desirable support.

These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my improved swing, and Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the sam Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout both views.

In carrying out my invention I employ a strip or section of canvas, drilling, or other similar material 1, which is designed to form in the manner hereinafter described the seat and back of the swing-body. In construct ing this seat and back body I cause to be inserted and suitably secured within each end of the strip 1 a transverse bar, the latter being indicated, respectively, at 2 and 8. At or near the center of the length of the strip 1 is inclosed transversely a bar 4, and to this latter bar, adjacent to each end thereof and on the outer side of the flexible cover 1, I secure a metallic socket-bracket 5, within the outwardly-projectingsocket portions of which are adapted to be detachably inserted the inner ends of seat-bars 6, the outer ends of the latter extending above the forward portion of the strip 1, adjacent to the sides thereof, and having their forward ends engaged with the end portions of the forward bar 2 by a suitable knotted engagement of supporting ropes or cords '7, this connection of said bars 6 and 2 being preferably effected, as shown, by running the lower end portions of the supporting-ropes 7 through openings in the adjoining bars and forming knots 8 in said ropes on the outer sides of the bars 6 and on the under sides of the bar 2. Upon the upper side or face of each of the bars 6, near its in ner end, I secure a socket plate or bracket 9, the socket portion of these brackets being adapted to receive the inner ends of bars 10, the outer ends of which are, in the, manner prescribed for the bars 6, adapted to be connected by rear supporting-ropes 11. Each of these ropes 11 run from the end of the bar 10, with which it is connected, upward over one of a pair of pulleys 12, thence downward, the lower end thereof being provided with a suitable rope-retaining link 13, through which also passes that portion of said rope which runs from the swing-body to the pulley. In a like manner each of the ropes 7 run upward from the forward ends of the bars 6 and over one of said pulleys, the lower end of said rope being provided with a retaininglink 14, which, as prescribed for the link 13, engages that portion of the rope 7 which runs from the bar 7 to the pulley.

It is obvious that the edges or sides of the flexible seat-body 1 may be suitably fringed or ornamented. When the parts are in the positions above describedthat is, when the inner ends of the bars 10 are within the sockets 9, and the inner ends of the bars 6 are within the sockets 5it will be observed that the rear portion of the flexible strip 1 will stand at an angle with the forward portion thereof, the forward portion thus forming a seat and the rear portion the back of the seatbody. By slipping the supporting- ropes 11 and 7 to cause an engagement of their retaining-links with different points on said ropes it is obvious that the angle at which the seat, constructed as above described, is supported may be varied to suit the pleasure of the occupant of the swing. When the swing is not in use, it will be seen that the bars 10 may be withdrawn from the socketpieces 9 and said bars swung inward and across the seat-back and the bars 6 may be likewise withdrawn from their sockets and turned inward across the seat portion, after which the body may be folded or rolled into a compact form, with the supporting-ropes inclosed' therein.

From the construction herein shown and described it will be seen that a simple and exceedingly-desirable form of swing is provided, the supporting-pulleys of which may be attached to any suitable upper support, and it will be observed that the means employed for setting up or connecting the parts of the swing to produce the seat and back are such as to admit of the same being readily accomplished.

Having now fully described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a swing, the combination with a section of flexible material and oppositely-located socket-brackets 5 secured thereto, of bars 6 having their outer ends jointedly connected with the forward portion of said flexible strip and their inner ends adapted to enter the sockets of said brackets 5, sockets 9 on the upper sides of said bars 6, bars 10 having their outer ends jointedlyconnected with the edge portion of said flexible strip and means connected with the forward and rear portions of said strip for suspending the swingbody thus formed, substantially as specified.

2. In a swing, the combination with a flexible strip 1, cross-bars 2, 3 and 4 secured therein as described, and socket-brackets 5 secured on said cross-bar 4, of bars 6 having their outer ends jointedly connected with the forward bar 2 and their inner ends adapted to enter said sockets 5, socket-brackets 9 on said bars 6, bars 10 having their outer ends jointedly connected with the bar 3 and their inner ends adapt-ed to enter the sockets 9 and adjustably-snpported ropes connected with the outer ends of said bars 10 and 6, substantially as specified.
