JAMES W. HEYLMUN, OF WILLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 659,302, dated October 9, 1900.
Application filed May 7, 1900.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. HEYLMUN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Williamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in buckles; and its primary object is to provide a device of this character which is simple, light, and durable in construction and which is adapted to be detachably secured to the cloth or other fabric en gaged thereby when the tongue or buckle is in operative position.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view thereof in raised position. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the tongue of the buckle locked. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, and Fig. 4 is a detail view of a modified form of buckle.
Referring-to said figures by numerals of refererence, 1 is a base substantially U- shaped in form and provided with coils or eyes 2 upon the parallel arms 3 thereof, at points between their ends, and the free ends 4 of said arms are preferably sharpened.
A tongue 5 is provided with outwardlycurved arms 6, which are turned inward at their ends, as at 7, and engage the eyes, 2, hereinbefore referred to. Pivoted to the arm 6 of the tongue are the looped ends 8 of a bow 9, which is adapted to receive the ends 4 of the arms 3 when the tongue is in its lowered position. When said tongue is raised upon itspivots, the bow is adapted to be thrown out of engagement with said ends 4.
The tongue 5, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is in the nature of a stem and is preferably provided with a hook at the end thereof,
Serial No. 15,769. (No model.)
which is adapted to engage the front edge of the base 1. I do not limit myself to this construction, however, as tongues of various forms may be employed.
In Fig: 3 I have shown a loop-shaped tongue 10, and this may, if desired, be bent downward into a hook for engagement with the edge of the base 1.
It will be seen that the complete buckle is made of but three pieces, and these are preferably'constructed of stiff wire. If desired, however, the same may be cut from sheetsteel or made in any other desired manner.
I do not desire to limit myself to buckles having the specific forms of tongues herein shown and described, as I am aware that various modifications may be made therein without departingfrom the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes and alterations as may fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Havingthus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a device of the character described,a base formed of a single piece of wire and comprising substantially-parallel arms; sharpenedends thereto; an intermediate or cross strip; coils projecting from the arms at points between the ends and the cross-strip; a hooked .tongue adapted to engage the cross-strip; arms thereto extending over and pivoted within the coil; and a bow formed of a single piece of wire and the ends thereof pivoted to the arms of the tongue, said loop adapted to receive the ends of the base when the tongue is in engagement with the intermediate strip.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES W. HEYLMUN.
