JOHN H. PINEO, OF BROOKLINE, MASSACHUSETTS.
SAFETY-GUARD FOR Hl-NGES.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 662,201, dated November 20, 1900.
' Application filed November 12, 1897. Serial No. 658,283. (No model.)
To aZZ whoiit it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN H. PINEO, of Brookline, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in SafetyGnards for Hinges; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improved devices whereby hinges in the'nature of loose butts may be securely locked against accidental unhanging.
One object of the invention is to so construct a safetyguard for hinges that the hingeplate may be protected against accidental unhanging.
Another object of the invention is to so construct a safety-guard of this nature that it may be readily attached to engage hinges at present in use without material alteration of the hinges.
Another object of the invention is to so construct a safety-guard of this nature that the guard may be readily removed from the hinge and swung clear thereof when occasion requires.
The invention consists in the pintle safety-' guard and in the means for mounting the same.
The invention also consists in a guide-staple havingalocking-shoulder and a combined safety-arm and pintle mounted on the guide and adapted to engage the sleeve on the hinge plate.
The invention also consists in such othe novel features of construction and combination of parts, as shall hereinafter be more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
The drawing represents a view of a shutter-hinge with portions ofthe shutter and of the part to which the shutter is hinged, showing the construction of the improved safetyguard and the manner of mounting the same.
Similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout.
In the drawing, A represents aportion of a building, and B a portion of a shutter. To the portion A is secured the bracket 5, having the pin or pivot 6. To the shutter B is. so-
cured the plate '7, having the vertical sleeve 8, which is journaled on the pivot 6. In the drawing the pin or pivot 6 is considerably shorter than the sleeve 8; but in some hinges it is found that the pin equals or exceeds the sleeve in length, in which case I propose to cut short the pivot to about the proportion shown in the drawing.
The safety-arm and locking device include a guide having the vertical portion 9 bent outward to form thelocking-shoulder 10. For convenience of securing I have shown this guide as provided with pins 11 11, the whole forming a staple; but it is obvious that any other well-known form of securing device may be substitutedfor the pins.
On the guide 9 is movable the ring 12, formed in part with the curved arm 13, which has at its lower end the pintle or pivot 14, adapted to be received in the upper portion of the sleeve 8.
When the safety-guard is in place and the shutter is accidentally lifted, the guard-arm 13 is also raised until the outer portion of the ring 12 strikes the locking-shoulder 10 on the guide 9, thus stopping the lifting of the sleeve 8 before the top of the pivot 6 is reached.
The ring 12 may be worked outward and over the locking-shoulder 10 by hand and the pivot let removed from the sleeve and swung out of the way to allow of the removal of the shutter with its plate 7 and sleeve 8 and of its subsequent rehanging.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A safety-guard for hinges comprising a combined guide and locking portion, a locking-arm movably mounted on the guide,'and adapted to engage the locking portion, and having a pivot for engaging the journaled portion of the hinge.
2. The combination with a hinge having a pivot, and a sleeve longer than the pivot mounted thereon, of a guard-arm having a pivot member, adapted to be received in the hinge -sleeve, and independent supporting means for the guard-arm, including a looking device therefor.
JOHN H. PINEO.
