NITED' STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB ORMEROD AND RUFUS KING, NEW YORK, N. Y.; SAID ORMEROD ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM W'. GOODWIN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYL- VANIA.
SMOKE-CONSUMER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 662,958, dated December 1900- Application file January 26; 1900. Serial No. 2,868- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, J ACOB ORMEROD and RUFUS KING, citizens of the United States, and residents of New York city, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke-Consumers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, formingapart thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Ourinvention relates to that class of smokepreventers for furnaces in which a jet of steam or air is ejected upon the bed of the fire when fresh fuel is put on. The said steam or air when ejected upon the bed-of the fire forms an inflammable gas, which aids combustion, thereby entirely consuming the smoke-forming particles, and embodies in its construction a series of rods and levers which work in conjunction with a dash-pot and valve and operate to open and close said valve and air-inlet formed upon the door.
Our invention also relates to that form of smoke-preventers which are set in operation by the opening of the fire-door and are automatically closed by means of the action of the dash-pot controlling a series of levers and rods.
The object of our invention is to produce a simple, effective, and absolutely-reliable device whereby the introduction of steam or air into the fire-chamber is automatically controlled. We attain this object by the illustrations in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a general front elevation of the apparatus attached to the front of a boiler. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken through the line 1 l of Fig. l and looking in the direction indicated by the arrow X. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. l and looking in the direction indicated by the arrow X, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged section through the dash-pot.
Reference being had to the drawings, A represents the front face of the boiler.
B represents a pipe supplying steamor air or any combustible gas, which enters the firebox through the branch pipe B.
1) represents a valve which is controlled by the rod 6, which in turn is connected to the piston-shaft c by means of the link 0. The piston-shaft 0 extends into a dash-pot O, fastenedto the face of the boiler.
Fastened horizontally to the front wall of the boiler is a rocking shaft, (indicated on the drawings by the letter D,) and has a depending arm (1, fastened securely upon it and engaging against the arm 6 of the bell-crank lever E, which is pivotally fastened upon a projecting arm E, which is formed upon and projects outwardlyfrom the fire-door F. The fire-box F is formed with a hot-air chamber f and is provided with longitudinal openings f to allow the admittance of air into the said chamber. The partition f forming the rear wall of the said hot-air chamber, is provided with a series of openings f along the top to allow the air to pass from the chamber f to a secondary chamber f", which is formed by the casingf The said casingf is provided with openings f allowing the air to pass from the chamber f to the fire-chamber E. Mounted on the front of the door F and movingin front of the openin g f is a plate c, which is provided with longitudinal openings 6 which conform in size and shape to the openings f. This plate or frame is held in position by and works within the flanges e and is connected to the bell-crank lever E by means of the link 6 A second depending arm cl is fastened to the rocking shaft D and is connected by the rod (1 to a leg d which moves up and down in the block 01* and engages against the upper side of a wedge-shaped plate (1 which is carried upon a frame (1 and is held upon same by means of the pins d engaging in the slot 01 This wedge-shaped plate d is given a longitudinal motion by the opening of the fire-door F, the said plate 61 being connected to the fire door by the rod (1 A third depending arm gis fastened to the rocking shaft D and is connected to the rod (1 by means of the rod g and link The end of the branch pipe B is inclosed within fire-brick b to protect it from the heat.
Referring to Fig. 4., c is the piston-head, which is provided with two or more checkvalves 0 and has a pipe 0 connecting the lower and upper portions of the dash-pot. The size of the opening in the pipec Where it enters the dash-pot at c is tapered and brought down to a very small opening the size of the said opening being determined by experiment. p
In practice the device operates as follows:
When the door is open for additional fuel,
the wedge-shaped plate 01 is forced along on its bed, causing the leg 61 to rise, thereby turning the rocking shaft D and raising the piston in the dash-pot, whichopens the valve 1) and allows the steam or gas to enter the fireboX, as shown in Fig. 3. When sufficient fuel has been put on, the door is closed andthe arm 6 of the bell-crank E strikes against the pin 6 causing the frame or plate 6 to rise and open the inlets into the chamber f, through which the air enters, and passing through the opening f is heated in the chamber f and passes out through the opening f into the fire-box. The piston in the dash-pot now slowly begins to drop, and the dropping of said piston in the dash-pot gradually closes the valve 1) and the inlets f in the fire-door.
To facilitate the raising of the piston in the dash-pot when the door is opened, checkvalves 0 may be constructed in the pistonhead. These valves consist, essentially, of a plug h, mounted on a shaft h, which moves when the door is open, and a leg engaging 'upon the upper edge of said wedge and connected to a depending arm on said oscillating shaft and employed as a means to turn the shaft when the door is'open, substantially as described.
In testimony that we jointly claim the foregoing as our invention we have signed our names, in presence of two witnesses, this th day of December, 1899. I
JACOB ORMEROD. RUFUS KING.
