Description

i @atten tatrsafwt @frn '.NIoHo LAS DIETERICH, or SANDWICH, ILLINOIS.
Lener. Patent No. schraal-teem?, 9, 1867.
IMPaovnD caser-Hoon.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:v
Beit known 'that I, NxdnoLAs DIETERICH, of Sandwich, DeKalb county, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Check-Hooks; and I do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation oi`1the-sam,'refcrence being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figurel is zx-side view.
Figure 2, a. front view. i
Figure 3,. a top view of the lower part of the hook. u i` Figures 4 and 5 show a. `variation in the construction of the hook foranothervstyle of harness, in which Figure 4 is-a side view. l i l l I Figure 5, 'a rear end view.
Figure 6 is a top' view of upper part of hook. 'Y
Horses are frequently mired or thrown, or become' entangled in the harness or placed in s ome other situation when itis desirable to release the check-reiu from its hookat once,- aud when this cannot be'readily done except by'cutting the rein. Itis with diiliculty that a tight check-reinisinserted into and taken out of'its hook; a. loosecheck-rein is often thrown out of its hook by the action of the horse. "The object of. my inven tion isto obviate these diiliculties, attending-the use of the lieckhooks in common use, by providing a'checlrhook from which the ehecksrein can, at any time, be released immediately, from which it' cannotbe released accidentally, and into which a tightrein can be more readily introduced.
1 floenable others skilled'in-the arttomake and'nse my invention-,I proceed to describe 'its construction and-operation. I maks' my hook, `oi anylsuitablo material, in-'two parts', A and Bv. The lower'part, B, is provided with a longitudinal v -shaped notch at thefront end, as shown at c, iig. 2, while the corresponding end of A is shaped to it into this notch." Lateral motion of the several parts-.is thus prevented.' C `is a projection,l provided with a screw' thread to attach the hook to the.harness, and is cast. as ya'. part of B, and of requisite size and length for the harness on which itis'to be used. The 'two partsare jointed at d. The. drawing .shows a lip, y, iig. 3,,cast
upon B, while A is provided with a corresponding cavity to receive thev lip, rthe two parts being heldtogether by the pin d. Any other 'suitable joint maybe used., D isa/spring', fastenedto B at IL, detached at the other end. The hook is operated and kept closed by means of this sp'riig. use the hook is attached to the harness by'rneans of the screw C, thatpart whichreceives. the rein being towardsthe' head of the horse. Itwill he uuderstoodvwithout detailed explanation Vthat whenlthe hoolris opened at c, 'bypres'sing down the arm i,'the check-rein,.fi f tight, will, by the straiufuponfit," 'be-atiende drawn from the hook'. It will also vbe readily seen that the rein, if' loose, can beeasil'y removed frol'the hook, that it canbe readily placed therein, and that it cannot. escape therefrom accidentally. v
-The hooliA as above Idescribed cannot be attachedto every kind of harness'. In some cases it is necessary to` have a portion of the harness between the two parts-of lt he hook A B. f To provide for this I construct a hook,
as shown at iig. 4. vThe upper part'of thisliook issubstantiallylthe sameas in iig. Il.y The lower part B is inadewith a short ami, K, and thescrew 0 is left olf. ThroughK is a square hole to receive abolt, E, of like .form, provided with a screw-th1'ead at th'elcwer end,- the upper eudvhaving `a projection-like the lip g,'being par-t.
of' the joint. The bolt E is permanently but loosely Aattach-ed to bythe pind. This hook can be fastened to that class -of harnesses known as' the saddle-pad harness, by passingthe bolt'E through the saddle and through i the arm lc, and securing the whole bythe nut. e. 1n this hook the spring D is fastened to thearm'z' and o,
instead of to the lower arm.- Fig. 4 is not quite correct. It should have been drawn showing the opening at c closed, and the 'arm so raised as' to bringthe nut e 'up againstthe arm` K, le'aviug al space between thetwoparts Vof the hook at the point where the 'bolt is to receive'the saddle.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claiuras new, and 'desire to secure by Letters' Patent, isf#- A check-hookiconstructed substantially as andforthe purposes spe'cied.
