- J. M. MARTIN. HOLSTER FOR PISTOLS.
(Application led Mar. 19, 1900.)
(No Model.)
INVENTOR WITNESSESI wf/f/ n lU irre @rares FarnNr rietenm JOHN MORE MARTIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HOLSTER FOR PISTOLS.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 668,382, dated February 19, 1901.
Application filed March 19, 1900. Serial No. 9,256. (No model- To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MORE MARTIN, (having declared my intention to become a citizen of the United States,) residing at No. 235 Fifth avenue, in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Holsters for Pistols; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to holsters for pistols, particularly those adapted to be strapped around the waist of the wearer over the hip. These holsters have heretofore been made of leather, with a flexible leather' strap fastened to the body side of the holster and folded as a cap over the top of the holster and buttoned to its outer side to protect the pistol from wet and retain it in the holster during the jolting or movements of the body. To withdraw the pistol from the holster, it was necessary iirst to unbutton the strap,an operation which was often difficult and took some time, particularly when the wearer was riding. As a pistol is generally needed in an instant, it has been customary to leave the strap nnbuttoned and tuck it in the holster, so that the pistol was uncovered and was frequently jumped out of the holster accidentally.
The object of my invention is to provide holsters with a serviceable and comfortable cap which`when in position effectually-protects the pistol and retains it in place, and yet can be quickly and conveniently thrown aside to permit the instant withdrawal of the pistol from the holster.
To this end my invention consists, brieiiy, of a holster cap or strap of leather or other suitable material folded over the mouth of the holster and attached pivotally to opposite sides of the same, so that it can be instantly and conveniently swung aside on its pivots to uncover the holster and permit the withdrawal of the pistol. I also use as the outer pivot a button and provide the strap with a corresponding buttonhole, so that its outer end can be unbuttoned from the holster and tucked within the same when not needed.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I shall first describe in detail the mode in which I carry it into practice and then particularly point out its novel features in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which the same parts are designated by like numbers in all the figures.
Figure l is a side view of a holster embodying my invention, showing the holster covered. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view showing the holster uncovered.
I make the holster preferably of leather i and of pistol form, as usual, and provide it with a loop 2, through which the waist-strap 3 is passed,as usual, to fasten the holster over the hip of the wearer.
Over the open top or mouth of the holster l is placed a folded strap or cap Ll, of flexible leather or other suitable material, normally to cover and retain the pistol in the holster, the ends of which strap are pivotally attached to the opposite sides of the holster by headed studs 5 6, so that by simply swinging the pivotal strap or cap 4 forward with the hand, as shown in Fig. 3, the holster is uncovered and the pistol can be instantly withdrawn for use.
I employ the outer stud or pivot 6 as a button, and provide the outer end of the strap 4 with a corresponding bnttonhole 7, so that the said free end of the strap can be unbuttoned from the holster and tucked within the holster when not needed.
Having thus set forth the nature of my invention and the mode in which I carry it into practice, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination, with a pistol-holster, of a retaining and protecting strap or cap folded over its top and pivotally attached to opposite sides of the holster.
2. The combination, with a pistol-holster, of a strap or cap folded over its top and pivotally attached to its opposite sides, the outer pivot being formed with a button and the outer end of the strap with a buttonhole detachably to engage the button.
3. The combination, with a flexible pistolholster, of a liexible protecting and retainingstrap folded over the top of the iiexible holster against, and pivoted to, its opposite sides.
JOHN MoRE'MARTrN.
In presence of DAVID G. RODE, E. BERENDSOHN.
