To all whom t may concern,.-
Beit known that I, PHILIPP LENZE, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at D- ren, Rhineland, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lighting Apparatus for Gas-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that type of gasburners in which a small constantly-burning jet is maintained for the purpose of igniting the larger illuminating-jet when the latter is turned on; and it consists in the features hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevafion of a burner embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical central section therethrough; Fig. 3, an enlarged top plan view of the burner; Figs. 4 and 5, enlarged detail sections on the correspondingly-numbered lines in the second figure; Fig. 6, a section on the line 6 6 of said second figure. Figs. 7 and 8 are enlarged details on sections following the section of Fig. 2. Fig. 9 is a sectional View similar to Fig. 8, but showing the valve and its float in position to close the gas-passage.
A represents a cylindrical outer casing closed by a base B and a cap C, the latter of which carries a bottomless depending cylinder C within and concentric with the outer casing and reaching nearly to, but not touching, the base thereof, so as to be sealed by the iiuid contents l) of said casing. Since the cylinder C is of less diameter than the casing A, two chambers are formed Within the latter, an annular outer or pressure chamber CZ, included between the walls of said casing and cylinder, and an inner concentric gas-chamber d', embraced by the surrounding wall of the cylinder.
Into the gas-chamber enters a gas-pipe F. through base B and rises to a point near the top of said chamber, where it terminates in a perforated head c, over which sits a valve E' for regulating or shutting off the ilow of gas. From the head c an igniting-tube F in constant communication with pipe E rises centrally through cap C and chamber f therein and discharges through nipple f on screwcap F', closing said chamber, into the lower end of the aerating-tube G, having ventilating-openings gimmediately at such point and discharge-openings g at its upper end, at which an igniting-ame is maintained above the lamp-burner H and centrally thereof, so that gas reaching said burner through the housing H may at once be lighted.
The valve E is guided vertically by the aforesaid igniting-tube F or by a hub c', rising from the perforated head e and serving for the attachment of said tube, and is connected by rods c" with an annular float I, nor mally resting on the liquid in the gas-chamber and following its iiuctuations. When the float rises, the valve is lifted off its seat, permitting the flow of gas into the chamber CZ', whence it is led through ducts 7c into the chamber f, escaping therefrom through perforations 7c' into the base of the housing H, where it is aerated from openings Zand then rises to the burner.
M is a pressure-pipe connecting with a source of pressure-supply and opening into the casing near the top of the pressure-chamber, so that the pressure in the latter may be increased at will or otherwise to raise the level of the liquid in the gas-chamber, and thereby open the gas-valve therein.
The upper ends of the rods t' may project beyond the valve, as represented in Fig. 8, to serve as stops to prevent it from rising so far as to close the ducts la. Consequently the height to which the float will rise is limited, and it may sometimes be temporarily submerged in the pressure fluid, as indicated in Fig. 2, while the normal equilibrium is being regained.
It will be observed that by the above c011- struction the ignitingtube is Wholly contained within the body of the lamp and in constant connection with the head of gas and that the gas for the illuminating-dame is led to the burner along practically the same path, but outside of and, in effect, concentrically with said igniting-tube.
I claiml. The combination of the annular outer pressure-chamber, the inner concentric gaschamber opening below into the pressurechamber, the gas-pipe rising within the gaschamber and having ports in its crown, the valve arranged to close said ports, the 'float by which said valve is controlled, the burner,

and the central igniting-tube extending from the crown of the gas-pipe through the valve and upward toward t-he burner.
2. The combination with the pressure-l ohamber and the inclosed gas-chamber, and oat-su pported valve in the latter, of the gaspipe controlled by said valve, the burner and the perforated housing leading thereto, the central igniting tube extending from the crown of the gas-pipe through the valve and upward to the base of said housing, and the aerating-tube receiving from said ignitingtube and rising to the center of the burner.
3. The combination with the burner, of the pressure-chamber d, the gas-chamber d inelosed thereby and opening thereinto at the base, the gas-pipe E with its perforated head, discharging into the upper part of the gasehamber, the Valve E for regulating the flow from said pipe into said gas-chamber, the aunular lio-at I supporting said Valve, the ignitng tube F leading from the gas pipe through the crown of the gas-Chamber and Connecting with the burner, the chamber f surrounding said ignitingtube, the duets commun ioaling between said chamberf and the crown of the gas-chamber, the aeratingtube G forming the Connection between the ignitng-tube and the burner, and the perforated housing I-I' forming the connection between the chamberf and said burner.
