TO ALL PERSONS TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME:
Be it known tha; I, ASAHEL G. BATGHELDER, of Lowell, ,in the county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Keys for Locks; and do hereby declare the same t0 be 'fully described in ,the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawing, which exhibits a. side elevation of a key provided with my invention.
The nature of my invention consists in forming a key, A, with a notch or recess, a, in that part of the shank which is directly in rear of the holt-throwing bit or projection c of ,the key. Such notch is to be of a. length about equal to the distance between the walls of the lock, so that the parts ole at each end of the notch, when inserted in the lock, may rest on 'the circular portions orbearings of the key-holes in the usual manner, The purpose of such notch is to enable the key-hole of the lock to be made shorter than would otherwise be neces.- sary, the same being in order to deceive a person who may attempt to open the lockwith a key unprovided with a'notch. He would naturally conclude the key-hole should be no longer than the key-bit and thc diameter of the shank combined, and therefore were hev to insert in the key-hole an ordinary key he could not throw the bol't with it, as the bit would not project suciently from the axis of the shank to enable him to throw the bolt With the key made with the notch a arranged as set forth, theends of the notch `being bevellcd, or made to stand at obtuse angles with the bottom of the notch, in man-ner as represented in the drawing, the key may be easily inserted in the lock, the inclined ends of the notch aiding in effecting the entrance of the key into, and its proper 'arrangement in the bearings of the key-holes of the opposite plates of the lock.
IWha-t I clzim as my invention, is-
The key A' as made with the notch a arranged in its shank, and with respect to its bit c, substantially in manner and for the purpose as specified;
I ASAHEL G. lBATO'HELDER.v
