TO ALL WHOM- IT1 MAY CONCERN: Y v
Bc it known that I, WILLIAM KHIBLE, of Salem, in the county of Columbiana, and State of Ohio, have Vinvented a new and useful Improvement in Gate-Fastening; and I do' hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the artftc make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 is an inside view oi'ra. gate with my improved fastening. Y l
Figure 2 is a section across thetop, taken in the line z z, tig. l.
Figure 3 is a partial section,4 taken `in the line y y, lig. L
Figure 4 is a detached part of-the fastening.
Similar letters of reference indica-te like parts. This invention relates te an improved device for fastening swing'gates cr doors, and consists of a. metal latch, extending across the upper part of the gate or door, and pivoted to the upper cross-bar of' the gate-frame.
'It'latches at the back end into a catch placed on the heel-post when the gate is closed, in which position` it is held by a spring, and keeps the gate shut. The gate is opened by means of a. knob-or other handle, which turns thelatch in the usual way, and disengages it. The device is very simple and effective. l
A represents an op'en gate, hung on hinges a a to a post, B. On the upper bar C of the gate-frame is pivoted the metal latch b at e, extending across the gate. The latch b is worked' up and d own by handles e e on each` side of the gate, in the usual way. The front end of the latch lies fiat on the gate-bar C, and works, in `a. guide, d; but the rear end` rises from the bar, and works in a guide, d', as shorvn clearlylin fig. 2.' When the gate is closed the'rear or hooked end of the latch b catches in a corresponding hook, g, fastened on the heel-post` and it is held in place to keep the gate shut by a spring, k, which bearsthe end of the latch up inte. the hook g; but when the handles e e, or either cf them, are turned, the front end of the latch b rises, and the rear end is disengaged, so that the gate may be opened. l
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The arrangement of the long latch b, in combination with the handles e e and the spring h, for fastening :s gateby catching in the hook g, placed o n the heel-postAB, substantially as hereiirdescribed.
The above specification of my inventicn'signed by me this 1st; day of December, 186t WILLIAM KIMBLE.
