Be it known that I, J. H. MILLER, ofthe city and county of Milwaukee, State of Wisconsin, huve'inventcdl :L new and useful Improvement in Weather-Strips for Doors; and I do hereby declare `that the following is a {'ull, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art tomake and use the same,I reference being had to the accompanying drawing, formingpart of this speciiieation. i i i The present invention relates to `an improvement in weather-strips for doors, and consists in so hanging und arranging the weather-strip that when the door is closed it will be brought down and upon the sill of the same in proper position for preventing the passage of air, dust, itc., under the door, while, as `the'door isopened, l it will so swing or turn as to pass freely over the sill, and offer no obstruction tothe movement of thedooinl In accompanying plate of drawings, my improvement in weather-strips is illustrated*- p i i l ,i
Figure 1 being a vertical section of a portion of the doorwit-h it applied thereto,"and also showingthe door-i sill in connection therewith, and i i l Figure 2 a view of one ofthe hinges by which the vv'eather-strip is hung to the door.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts. i i ,t p
A, in the drawings, represents n. door,'B the sillhnand Cv, the jamb. D,ithe weather-strip,hingedto and along the door near its lower edge, by means of one orV more hinges, E E, one oli-which isishown" in iig. l2, and bas a spiral spring wound around the spindle G of its butt, upon which" the lea-ves of the hinge swing or turn, and so connected to said spin'dlc and the hinge leaves as to have a tendency to throw the said leaves o'pcnor1 apart and away from each other for'a purpose to be hereinafter explained.' This weather-strip D extends entirely; across the width of the door, and over it is placed a sheet-metal or other suitable covering projecting plate II, which is secured and fixed to and upon the door, by means of screws or any other proper fastening devices. Upon the jamb of the door is secured a plate, I, in proper position, that as the door is shut or closedits weatherstrip at the end corresponding thereto will strike against its edge J, and thus be swung down and into a vertical position over the door-sill, forming a tight and close joint by its lower edg"c"therewith,`and thereby serving to prevent all air, dust, Sie., from passing under the door, as is plainly shown in gtl, inwhieh ligure the door is shown as partially and slightly open, the weatherstrip, when the door is` being swung open, being inclined sul eiently by the action of its spring hinge or hinges to entirely clear and pass over thedoor-sill, and thus o'er d, no obstruction to the free movement of the door. t i
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent t t p The combination of the weather-strip D, hung to a swinging door-plate, H, spring hinge E, and projecting i plate I of tbe door-jamb, substantially as and for the purpose described. i i
