NEWTON' J. GLovER, or WAVELAND, lINDMNA..
Letters Patent No. 69,337, dater/Z October l', 1867.
@Le rlgtmls reemh tu in thesis tetters @tout mit mating im nf tige tame.
TO ALLWHOM ITv MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, NEWTON. J. GLOVER, of Waveland, in the county of Montgomery, and State of Indiana,
have invented a new and improved Farm-Gate; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the lettersoi` reference marked thereon.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and usemy invention7 I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. i v
I -make the gate by upright strips on each side of the horizontal slats, and bolt or otherwise fasten where they cross, as indicated by the dots, theslats extending beyond the right-hand strips suiiciently to enter the slots or mortises in the post L when the gate is closed. The slats are stayed in the centre by strip V. The
hinge-post E has round tenons on each end that work in holes in the'pieces F F. The lower piece is secured to the gate-post M by a gain cut in the pos-t, and the upper piece lies on theA top of the post. Both may be nailed or otherwise fastened; and these pieces are set at a suiricient angle from the post M to allow the gate to be moved back andforth, and to turn at right anglesbetween the postM and the hinge-post E. Guide-pieces H and I arebolted to the hinge-post E, and are stayed at the other end by strip P, and the whole is supported by the brace N. These guide-pieces are made thicker than the slats of the gate to give the gate room to slide between the hinge-post E,and strip O, and brace N, and strip P. Roller By has a flangeon each end that keeps it in the space between the guide-piece Hand the top slat A of the gate. On this roller the main Weight ofthe gate rests, and as the' gate is moved back and forth the' roller rolls on the guide-piece H. The gate may be moved back until strip C comes against brace N, at which point the weight of the gate balances on the hinge-post E; thence, if a wider opening is desired, it may be turned at rightlangles, leaving open almost the entire space between the gate-posts M and L, and by the gate balancing as described but very little strainis produced on either the gate or the post M when the same is being opened and closed.
I believe I have described and represented the improvement in the farm-gate which I have invented, so as to enable othersskilled in the art to make and usethe same. I willlnow state what I desire to secure by Letters.
Patent: 4
I claim the double-flanged roller B, the pieces A EHVI'P, and the brace N, in combination, substantially as described and set forth. l
NEWTON J. GLOVER.
