SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 696,502, dated April 1, 1902.
Application filed August 7,1900. Serial No. 26,121. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, REINHARDT Snnunon, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city of New York, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picture-Frames, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to picture-frames, and especially to improvements in picture-frames constructed wholly of metal.
The object of my invention is to produce a picture-frame that is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and that can be easily and quickly assembled, so that the parts of the frame will be held against accidental disengagement and the picture or object contained therein will be protected from injury.
The accompanying drawings illustrate several forms of construction embodying my invention, and my invention will be described herein with reference thereto.
In said drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my improved frame, the picture or other object to be held thereby being removed. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 represents a central vertical section of the frame and a picture or similar object held therein. Fig. 4 shows a rear elevation of a different form of pictureframe embodying my invention. Fig. 5 is a central vertical section of the same, showing the picture or other object therein.
The casing 1 of the frame may be-of any preferred outline and is provided with a large central opening 2. The rim portion 3 of the casing that surrounds the central opening is bent to form an overhanging lip or ilango 4E. The body portion 5 of the casing is flared outwardly from the rim portion, and its outer edge is bent at an angle thereto substantially parallel to the rim portion, forming a circumferential flange 6. Said flange is provided with a groove or recess 7 extending entirely or partially around same. The back 8 of the frame consists, preferably, of a single piece of metal provided with an annular flange 9, formed approximately at right angles thereto. Said flange is provided with beads or projections 10 to engage and interlock with the corresponding recess or recesses provided in the outer flange of the casing. The central portion of the back is preferably bent or dish-shaped, so that the resiliency of the metal may be utilized in holding the bead and the groove in engagement with each other. The picture or other object'll to be held in the frame rests in the seat formed by the rim portion and the overhanging lip or flange, which does not extend inwardly as far as the junction of the rim and the body portion, and is prevented from outward displacement by means of the lip. Said picture may be protected by plates of glass or plates of glass and wood 12. A spring 13 is secured to the back and presses against the picture or one of its protecting-plates and holds the same firmly, but yieldingly, to its seat.
If preferred, the back of the frame may be secured to the casing by means of a hinge 14, in which case the frame is closed and the back is held in engagement with the casing by means of an interlocking bead and groove formed opposite the hinge. A ring 15 or other means for attaching the frame to a suitable support may be secured to the back, if desired.
The picture or other object to be held in the frame with its protecting-plates is placed in the seat formed by the lip and the rim portion of the casing. The back is then secured in place by engaging the interlocking beads and grooves formed in the back and the ensing, respectively. The spring secured to the back is thus brought to bear againstthe picture or other object and holds the picture firmly, but yieldingly, to its seat, so that the frame can be moved'without displacing the picture or other object contained therein.
The frame consists, essentially, of only two parts, each of which is formed of a single piece of metal. The parts can be easily and quickly assembled, as the back is merely snapped into place, and the resiliency of the metal crowds the bead on the back into the groove in the casing and securely holds the same against accidental disengagement. The flaring body portion of the casing provides ample space for the insertion of plates of glass or plates of glass and wood, cardboard,
or similar material to protect the picture or other object to be displayed. Displacement or disarrangement of the picture and its protecting-plates is effectually prevented by i tached to said back to hold a picture against 10 means of the yielding spring secured to the said rim. frame, which holds same to its seat. In testimony whereof Isign this application, I claim as my inventionin the presence of two Witnesses, this 36. day In a picture-frame, the combination with a of August, 1900.
