This air-chamberlies along the line of movement of the channels G, and these channels are therefore in open communication with the chamber as the cylinder rotates.
The air maybe exhausted from the chamber 13 in any desired manner. As shown, however, the chamber is provided with a suitable opening which communicates with a pipe 16, leading to any suitable form of suctionproducing device-as, for instance, a fan, the casing of which is indicated at 17 in Fig. 1. As shown, the fan is driven by means of a belt 18 and pulley 19, said belt running over another pulley 20, mounted on a shaft 21, which is driven from any suitable source of power. The suction-producing fan operates continuously to draw the air from the chamber 13. Inasmuch as the suction-channels v6 are in open communication with the chamber, except as hereinafter specified, it will be seen that in the rotation of the cylinder as soon as one of the cutting-blocks 5 comes in contact with a web of paper the Web will be clamped against the block by the force of the suction and will be held against the cylinder until the suction is cut off by means now to be described. i
The means by which the suction is cut off from the channels in order to release the sheet Preferably, however, these means will be carried by the head, before referred to, and will be adj ustable with relation to it, so that the suction may be cut off at any desired point. When, as in the preferred form of the construction, the air-chamber is circular in configuration, the means for cutting off the suction from the channels will preferably consist of an arc-shaped block 22, which is located in the chamber, said block corresponding in size to the cross-sectional area of the chamber, so that it entirely fills it. As the cylinder rotates, therefore, it will be `seen that as the mouth of each channel 6 comes opposite the block the suction will be cut off from the channel and will remain cut off until the mouth of the channel has passed the block. The block 22 is preferably made adj ustable,so that the suction may be cut off at any desired point inthe rotation of the cylinder, the means by which the adjustment is effected being ofany desired construction. As shown, the head is provided with a slot 23, `and the block 22 carries a pin 24, (see Fig. 2 and dotted lines in Fig. 3,) the head of this pin being provided with a suitable nut 25. By loosening the nut the block may be adjusted to any desired position in the channel within the limits of the length of the slot. The block is preferably so located in the head that it will operate to cut off the suction from the channels just before the channels reach the sheetdelivery point, so that the sheets may be dropped easily into the sheet-receiver and without being thrown against the side of the receiver with undue force. The position of the block may therefore be varied according to the speed at which the carrier is run and according to the weight of the paper.
Any suitable form of sheet-receiving device may be employed. As shown, the sheet-receiver consists of a table 26, mounted 011 a bracket 27, secured to a suitable slide 23, which moves in vertical guides 29. The slide 28 is connected by means of a cable 30 t0 a balance-spring 31, so that the weight of the sheets deposited on the receiver may causo it to Amove downward. This receiver is a wellknown one, and any other suitable form of receiver may be substituted therefor.
In order to insure the positive separation of the forward end of the sheet from the cylinder after the suction has been cut off, a suitable stripper is preferably provided. This stripper may be of any suitable construction. As shown, the shaft 32 is provided suitably mounted in the frame of the machine, said shaft being provided with stripper-fingers 33, which enter grooves 34 in the cylinder, the stripper being so located as to catch the forward edge of the sheet as soon as the suction is cut off.
It has been found by practical experience that when the carrier is run at a high rate of speed the sheets are apt to adhere to the surface of the cylinder, even though a stripper be employed. To prevent the sheets from adhering to the cylinder, suitable means are or may be provided which act upon the sheet between its ends and force it from the cylinder. is slotted, as indicated at 35, between each of the suction-channels. Through these slots work fingers 36, which are carried on shafts 37, suitably mounted in ears 3S on the interior of the cylinder. Each of the shafts 37 is provided with an arm 39, which carries a bowl 40, arranged to contact with a stationary cam 41, connected to the hub 9 of the head 8. The cam is so located as to rock the shaft to throw out the fingers at about the time when the stripper catches the forward edge of the sheet. The fingers 36 may be returned to their position within the cylinder in any desired manner. As shown, each of the shafts 37 is provided with an arm 42, which is connected to an ordinary spring-rod 43.

The combination with a rotating cylinder having a plurality of suction -channels arranged near its periphery, of a head having a circular air-chamber with which the channels communicate, an arc-shaped block located in the chamber and serving to close the channels successively as they pass it, and a pin-and-slot connection for adjusting the block and locking it in position, substantially as described.

The combination with a pair of cuttingcylinders, one of said cylinders having a plurality of suction-channels,of a stationary head provided with an air-chamber with which the channels communicate, means for interrupting the communication between the chamber and the channels, a sheet-receiver, a stripper acting upon the forward edge of the sheet, and pivoted delivery-arms, said arms and stripper operating to deliver the sheet to the sheet-receiver, substantially as described.

VThe combination with a pair of cuttingcylinders, one of which is provided with a plurality of suction-channels, of a stationary head having an air-chamber with which the channels communicate, an adjustable block located in said chamber and serving to interrupt the communication between the chamber and the channels, a sheet receiver, a stripper acting upon the forward edge of the sheet, and pivoted 'delivery-arms, said arms and stripper operating to deliver the sheet to the sheet-receiver, substantially as described.

The combination with a pair of cuttingcylinders, one of which is provided with a plurality of suction-channels, of a stationary head having a circular airchamber with which the channels communicate, means for interrupting the communication between the chamber and the channels, a sheet-receiver, a stripper acting upon the for'ward edge of the sheet, and pivoted delivery-arms, said arms and stripper operating to deliver the sheet to the sheet-receiver, substantially as described.
