UNITED STATES 'PATENT CEETCE.
EDGAR ALLAN PETEIE, or EEEwiok, LoUisIANA.
WAGON-JACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 700,367, dated May 20, 1902.
n Application led October 2l, 1899. f Serial No. 734,344. (No model.)
T all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR ALLAN PETEIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berwick, in the parish of St. Mary and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Wagon-Jaclr,of which the following is a speci-L cation. Y f y My invention relates to lifting-jacks, and has for its object to provide acheap, simple, and durable jack which can readily be operated with the minimum amount of power.
With this object in View my invention con'- sists in a vertical standard slotted and carry-z ing a sliding bar adapted to be raisediand lowered by a curved lever fulcrumed on the standard and connected thereto by means of a link and pin, the pin sliding in theV slot in thestandard.
My invention further consists in such parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be fully described hereinafter, pointed out in' the claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention complete. Fig. 2 is a similar view looking from the rear. Fig. 3 is an end View, and Fig. 4 is a cross-section through the standard and lifting-bar. y A
Referring now more particularly to the drawings by reference-numerals, 5 indicates asuitable base, on whichis secured the standard 6, provided with side'langes 7 and 8 to form a dovetailed groove; in which the liftingbar 9 is slidably secured, the edges of said bar being beveled to register with the inner walls of said flanges. This'sliding bar is provided with a slidable head 10, adjustably held on said bar by a pin l1 engaging in the perforations 12. v
Securedon the bar 9 and projecting through the slot 13 is a pin 14, engaged by one end ofv the link-bar 15, while to the other end of the link-bar a curved-lever lgis secured at 17. Said lever is` fulcrumed to the standard at 18. The slot-13 extends entirely to the bottom of the standard, thereby forming two legs, the
4lower end of each of which is bent laterally and perforated to form a foot by means of which the standard is secured to the base. One of the feet is bent in one direetioxnasY under the bar 9, and the other one isbent in the opposite direction. This construction of `the lower end of the standard gives it a good substantial support and at the same time lrenders it possible 4for a blacksmithto make the jack without special tools, as the lower ssY end of the standard can be easily split to form 4tlieslot and the ends of. the legs bent later- Iallyto form the feet.
To add rigidity to the standard, a bracebar 19 is secured thereto at the pivot-point of A curved lever and to the base 5. To permit of the link passing the upper end of the brace and -thefbolt for securing it in position, the intermediate portion of the link is bent or bowed outwardly, as shown in Fig. 3,
The operation of my invention is as follows All the parts being assembled, the handle of the curved leverfis grasped and pushed down until the link-bar assumes a vertical position,
thus raising the lift-bar, and by reason of thecurved end ofthe lever the center of gravity will be thrown slightly to the right of the pivot-point thereof, which will cause the parts I to remain in thegdesired position until the lever is again raised.
The head can be adjusted to suit a variable number of heights through: the4h medium of the pin and perforations in the lift-bar.
Having thus fullydescribed myinvention, what I claim asA new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is;
A lifting-jack comprising in combination a base 5, carrying aA standard 6, provided with side anges 7 and 8, the lifting-bar 9 slidably secured hetweenthe said flanges, the edges of said bar being beveled to correspond with the innerwalls -ofsaid anges, the slidable f head 10 adjustablyvheld on the said bar 9, the pin V11 .for securingthe head, said pin engaging the perforation 12, the pin 14 secured upon the bar 9 and projecting through the slot 13, said pin 14 engaging the link-bar 15 kat one end and the curved lever 16p-secured to the said link-bar at 17, said leverbeing fulcrumed to the standardfat 18,- and the brace-bar 1,9 connecting the-standardand base, and all arranged andadapted-to operate substantially as shown and described.
