To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OswALo GUSTAV BAR- TUSOH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Imconnecting the sets from the driving mech-.

The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter, and

A practical embodiment of theinvention is represented in the accompanying drawings,
' forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is an end elevation of the improve ment. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is alongitudinal sectional elevation of the same on the line 4 4C of Fig. 3.
The numbering apparatus illustrated in by screws or other means in position on the printing-press frame or other support after the numbering devices are moved along the shaft to occupy the desired position, and in the ends E of each casing E is secured by setscrews F. or like means a sleeve F, through which extends the shaft B, and on the sleeve are mounted to rotate numbering-wheels G G G G provided with the usual ratchet-- wheels H, engaged by pawls I, held on the pawl-frame I, mounted to swing from the sleeve F as the fulcrum.
As shown in the drawings, the pawl-frame I is U-shaped, and its side arms I extend between the ends E of the casing E, and the said side arms are mounted to turn loosely on the fixed sleeve F, and between the side arms extend the numbering-wheels,as plainly indicated in the drawings, special reference being had to Fig. 4
Each of the side arms I of a pawl-frame I is provided with a screw or pin 1 extending radially inward in the bore of theside arm and through a transverse slot F, formed in the sleeve F, to finally extend into a keyway or groove B, formed lengthwise in the shaft B. Now when the shaftB is rocked from the cam-wheel D by means of the crank-arm C then the several pins 1 are carried along, and consequently a swinging motion is given to the pawl-frame I to cause the pawls I thereof to actuate the numbering-wheels G G G G in the usual manner. The numbering-wheels are held against accidental return movement by the usual spring-dogs J. (Shown in Figs. 2 and 3.) Now by the arrangement described it will be seen that anyone of the numbering devices A or A can be moved lengthwise on the shaft B without disconnecting the shaft B from the pins 1 as the latter move with their inner ends along the groove B, so that the shaft when rocked imparts a swinging motion to the pawl-frame to cause the pawls thereof to turn one, two, or more of the numbering-wheels and bring a consecutive number to an uppermost or printing position.
It will be seen that by the arrangement described the several parts remain in proper position on the casing when the device is removed from the shaft B, and the device may be placed on the shaft in either a forward or backward position without affecting the working of the device.
The numbering apparatus is composed of comparatively few parts and is exceedingly compact, not liable to easily get out of order, and adapted to work with great accuracy when run at a very high speed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A numbering apparatus havinga longitudinally-grooved shaft, a casin g, a sleeve fitted on the shaft and extending through and secured at both ends to the casing, numbering-wheels all mounted loosely on the sleeve, a pawl-frame hung on the sleeve and having an interlocking connection with the grooved shaft to be actuated thereby, and pawls carried by said pawl-frame.
2. A numbering apparatus havinga grooved rock-shaft, a double-arm ed casing, a sleeve secured at its ends to the arms of the-casing and fitted loosely on the shaft, a pawl-frame hung loosely on the sleeve and provided with projections which extend into the groove of the shaft, numbering-wheels all mounted loosely on the sleeve, and pawls carried by the pawlframe; said sleeve and the casing with the connected parts being shiftable endwise on the shaft and the projections of the pawlframe being slidable in the groove of said shaft.
3. Anumberingapparatus,havingacasing, a sleeve fixed therein and provided with a transverse slot, a numbering-wheel mounted to turn loosely on the said sleeve, a pawl for driving the numbering-wheel, mounted to rock on the sleeve, a pin extending from the pawl through the said slot, and a rock-shaft extending in the sleeve and engaged by the said pin, as set forth.
4. Anumberingapparatus,havingacasing,
a sleeve fixed thereinand having a transverse slot, a numbering-wheel mounted to turn loosely on the sleeve, a pawl for driving the numbering-wheel, mounted to rock on the said sleeve, a pin extending inwardly from the pawl through the said slot, and a rockshaft extendingin the sleeve and having a longitudinal keyway for engagement by the inner end of the said pin, as set forth. 5. A numbering apparatus having a longitudinally-grooved shaft, and a plurality of numbering devices each being shiftable lengthwise of the shaft and operable therefrom, each numbering device havinga casing, a slotted sleeve secured at both ends to the casing and fitted loosely on the shaft, a pawlframe hung on the sleeve and provided with projections which pass through the slots in the sleeve and enter the groove of the shaft, numbering-wheels on the sleeve, and pawls on the pawl-carrier.
6. A numbering apparatus, comprising a rock-shaft, a plurality of numbering devices held adjustably on the said rock-shaft and each comprising a casing, a fixed sleeve in the casing,through which extends the rockshaft, a numbering-wheel mounted to turn loosely on the sleeve, a pawl fulcrumed on the sleeve, and a pin extending through a slot in the sleeve to engage a longitudinal keyway in the said shaft, as set forth.
