To (LZZ whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. GUTHRIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Marys, in the countyofAuglaize and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Drive-Heads for Oasings for Gas, Oil, or other W'ells, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and usefulimprovements in drive-heads for drivepipes and casings for oil, gas, or other wells.
The invention aims to construct a drivehead which may be termed a drop drivehead for oil and gas well drive-pipes and casings and aims to overcome the destroying of the threads on the casing-section and coupling. The devices which are generally used for this purpose in connection with oil-well casings are provided with threads, on which is screwed the coupling for connecting the casing sections together, the objection to drive-heads of this character being that any amount of inconvenience is caused by the destroying of the threads both on the casingsection and the coupling.
The object of this invention is to provide a head used in connection with oil-well casings which will drop inside the casing and rest on the top of the coupling.
The invention further aims to construct a drive-head with an elongated shank, so that when in position it will remain in the casingsection and not injure the same nor the threads of the coupling.
The invention further aims to construct a drop drive-head for oil and gas well drivepipes and casings which shall be extremely simple in its construction, strong, durable, efficient in its use, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture; and to this end it consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more specifically described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claim hereuntoappended.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein- Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved head. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View thereof; and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View of an oil-well casing, showing my improved head attached thereto.
Referring to the drawings by reference-numerals, 1 indicates the upper section of an oil Well casing, which is exteriorly screwthreaded and has secured thereto the coupling 2, which projects above the same.
The reference-numeral 3 denotes the bit, and 4 the stem therefor, which extends upwardly through the drive-clamps 5 6, secured together by the bolts 7,and is usually attached to the platform or derrick (not shown) when drilling oil-wells.
l have shown the foregoing, which forms no part of my invention, so that the arrangement of the drop drive-head in' connection with the casing-section and couplingcan be understood.
The reference-numeral 8 denotes the body portion of the drive-head, which is substantially tubular and formed with a depending tubular shank 9, the head and shank being hollow, with the external diameter of the depending shank less than the external diameter of the body portion. By forming the body and shank of two different diameters an annular shoulder 10 is formed at the juncture thereof, which is adapted to rest upon the top edge of the coupling. The bodyportion is provided with openings 11 for the purpose of connecting arope orother means thereto to fasten the head up to the stem, so as to keep it out of the road when they are disconnecting the bit from thestem. The head is used by slipping it upon the stem. The bit is then secured to the latter, which is then inserted within the casing, and when the tool is pulled up through the casing the tool, being larger than the depending shank, elevates the head out of the casing and leaves the top of the casing clear to run the sand-pump. WVhen the tools are insertedin the casing, the head drops into place on the top of the coupling and the depending shank extends within the coupling and easing, remains there and keeps .but it will also be evident that an immense amount of time and labor is saved by the employment of the drop drive-head constructed in the manner as hereinbefore set forth. The time saved is usually'from twenty to thirty minutes in adjusting the drive-head to each joint of pipe as it is driven in the well, as the screw drive-head has to be screwed on with large wrenches, which takes from twenty to thirty minutes at each operation, while by the employment of the construction of the drive-head as hereinbefore set forth it is simply dropped in the end of the pipe or collar, or, in other words, it is not necessary for the drive-head to be screwed to the coupling in any manner or to the pipe-section. This is a material advantage not possessed in the screw drive-heads usually employed.
It is thought that the many advantages of a drop drive-head for oil-well casings constructed in the manner set forth can be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and it will also be noted that minor changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A drop drive-head for oil-Well casings, consisting of a hollow body portion provided with a pair of openings for the purpose of connecting a suitable means thereto to fasten the drive-head for the purpose set forth, and an elongated hollow shank integral with said body portion and having a smooth periphery, said shank of less diameter than said body portion, said body portion adapted to rest upon the upper end of the casing when the drive-head is in operative position and said shank adapted to extend within and be freely removable from the casing when the body portion engages the top thereof.
