Description
@uitrit gister gamut @ifica- WARREN n. SHAY, OF ferma/inra, onto;A Letters Patent No. 72,094, dated December l0, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT 1N rsNcs-Posrs.
TO ALL WHOM IT :MAY CONCERN.:
l Be it known that I, WARREN H. SHAY, of Sylvania, in the county of Lucas, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in FencePost; and I do hereby declare that( the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the'same, reference being 4 had to the accompanying drawings, formingpart of this specification, ini-which- Figurel is a side elevation of my improved fence-post.
Figure 2 is a view of the same taken apart. l
Figure 3 is a side View of a fence with my improved'p'osts,
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to'an improved method of constructing fence-posts, and consists in forming them of plank uprights, supported by braces and held together by cross-ties and keys, as hereinafter more particularly described. I i l vB B are pieces of plank, six inches, more or less, in width, and as long as may be required according to the height of the fence, which pieces of plank are set upright near together, side by side, to serve as standards or supports for rails or board panels, placed between them, as shown iniig. V3, resting on pins a a, crossing through both at such points as may be desired, according to the number of rails or panels in the' fence. A A are braces, set in an inclined position on the outside of'. the standards, and secured atthe lower part by a crosspiece, C, which is joined to them by dove-tail tenons, b'r'b, en therends. The upper ends of the braces A A are bevelled and fitted to lie close against the outside of the standards B B, and bound `in place against them by double wedges, or a gib, c, and key d, which, when driven up' together, make the whole frame tight. .In the j cross-piece C' is a slot, e, extending outside of the standardsB B, on the outside of both of which keys g g are driven through the slot, to bring thevst'andards up tight against the rail` or panel placed between them to form a fence; i I t The fence-post thus constructed is cheap, rm, and durable, and may be set in the ground or upon the surface only, as the braces render it self-supporting when the rails are in place, and'it may be used in any situation for split rails, boards, p'eketstslabs, wire, or any other kind of fencing material, saving nails and labor in construction., p
Having described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The plank standards B B, joined by the pins a a, the` braces A A, and the cross-pieceC, combined and secured by the dove-.tail tenons b 6, the gib and key c d, and the keys g g, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
WARREN H. SHAY.
