To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PRESSTMAN J. RICHARD- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Broken Bow, in the county of Custer and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,

clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention aims to prevent the refilling of a bottle or analogous package without rendering detection possible, thereby throwing a safeguard about a particular brand of goods and reducing the chances for the perpetration of fraud upon the consumer and the proprietor, whereby a mutual benefit is derived.

In accordance with this invention the cork after being forced home into the neck of the bottle or package is secured by means of a wire orlikestrand passed through openings in the sides of the neck of the bottle and through was the cork and having the loose ends secured beneath the label affixed to the bottle, thereby preventing the removal of the cork without either severance of the wire or'strand or a mutilation of the label, or both,thereby warning the observing purchaser that the bottle or package has been tampered with.

For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for efiecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and drawings hereto attached.

While the essential and characteristic features of the-invention are susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of the upper portion of a bottle embodying the invention.

wire or strandafter it has been threaded through the openings in the neck of the bott-le and prior to tightening the same and affixing the label. Fig. ,3 is a vertical section of the neck portion of the bottle. Fig. 4 is a plan section on the line X X of Fig. 3.

The bottle or package 1 may be of any size and shape, and its neck 2 ispreferably reinforced near the mouth or outer end, as shown at 3. Openings 4 are provided in the sides of the neck, preferably at diametrically opposite points,andinclineoutwardly and downwardly and communicate at their outer ends with grooves 5, formed in the sides of the neck.

A wire or strand 6 is adapted to be threaded through the inclined openings 4;, and its end portions are bent to enter the grooves 5 and terminate in coils 7, which are confined between the body of the bottle and the label 8, pasted or otherwise affixed thereto.

The bottle or package after being fiilled is sealed by means of the cork 9, after which the wire or strand 6 is passed through the openings 4 and through the cork, the end portions being fitted in the .grooves 5 and formed into the coils 7. The coils 7 are confined by means of the label 8. To open the bottle or package, it is necessary either to mutilate the label in order to liberateone or both ends of the wire or to break the latter in the act of extracting the cork, and in either event the fact is made apparent that the package or bottle has had the seal broken, thereby warning the prospective. customer, so that the package may be rejected.

"Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- A bottle or package provided with a neck thickened for a short distance from its outer end, transverse openings in diametrically opposite portions of the thickened part of the neck, vertical grooves in the outer side of the said thickened part of the neck in communication at their upper ends with'said openings, a cork sealing said bottle, a wire passed through the cork and said transverse openings and having its end portions bent and fitted in the said vertical grooves and having interlocked terminal coils arranged to bear against a side of the bottle, and a label affixed to the body of the bottle and confining PRESSTMAN J.
