Be it known that I, SETH A. ORONE, a Acitizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and use` ful Improvements in Brake-Beams, of which the following is a specification.l
i The invention relates to improvements in brake-beams for railway-cars; and it consists in the novel features of construction and i combinations of parts hereinafter described,
and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Brake-beams of the class towhich my in- 'vention pertains comprise a rolled body-beam of suitable length,'brakeheads of standard construction on the ends thereof, and a fulcrum for the brake-lever; and .my invention has forits object to produce a novel fulcrum for use in such beams, said fulcrum beingl efficient and capable of Vbeing firmly and quickly applied tothe beam. The fulcrum of my invention may be formed of either one or two pieces of forged metal bent to the required shape and adapted to be firmly riveted or bolted to the bodybeam.

The invention will bef ully understood from the detailed description hereinafter present- `ed,\reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which* Figure 1 is an edge view of a fulcrum constructed in accordance with and embodying my invention, the fulcrum being shown as secured to a usual body-beam, the latter being in section on the dotted line 1 1 'of Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly broken away, of a brake-beam equipped with a fulcrum embracing my invention. Fig. 3 is a detached top v iew of the fulcrum. Figs. 4 and 5 are detached top views of the blanks from which the fulcrum parts are formed when said fulcrum is in two pieces, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 6 is a detached perspective view of the two main parts of the fulcrum .as manufactured from the blanks shown in Figs. 4 and 5, and Fig. 7 is an elevation of the blank from which the fulcrum will be formed when the latter is in one integral piece instead of in the two separate parts represented in Fig. 6.
Inthe drawings I illustrate a brake-beam fulcrum` formed of two parts and represent a blank from which a one-part forged -metal fulcrum may be formed, and in the Letters Patent of the United StatesNo. 720,676 is shown a forged -metal fulcrum in one piece and in said Letters Patent No. 720,677 is shown a forged-metal fulcrum composed of two parts. The present invention in its broader scope therefore comprises .aforgedmetal fulcrum formed of either one or two parts, my invention being equally applicable to both characters of fulcrum, and compris* ing a new fulcrum structure in which the forged-metal parts thereof possess the maximum degree of strength and efficiency and in which said parts are not strained, stretched, or weakened in the bending processes inciudent to the manufacture of the fulcrum.
The manner of forming the blanks of Figs. 4 and 5 into the fulerum members 12 13 is clearly illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, and 6, in
which it will be seen that the main part of the portion 23 of the blanks is fashioned into the flange 15, while those parts of the blank intermediate the curved lines 26 and adjacent thereto are fashioned into the flanges 16 and 17 the flange 16 resting against the inner surface of the :flange 19 of the beam 10, whence the fulerum member extends around the edge of said flange 19, and thence turns inwardly along and then outwardly on a diagonal line from the outer face of said liange 19, thereby forming the curved flange 17 and imparting to the side of the fulerum member its desirec angularity of position.
By manufacturing the fulerum members 12 13 from blanks of' the form shown in Figs. 4 and 5, having the laterally reversely offset end portions 23, the flanges 15, 16, and 17 may be-formed without stretching or weakening the metal, and the said flanges 15 of said members may be arranged to set one a little in advance of the other on the beam 10, as shown by the solid and dotted lines, respectively, in Fig. 2, thereby leaving the opening between the sides 14 14 in proper condition to receive the brake-lever. (Not shown. The formation of the fulerum members 12 13 from the blanks 21 22 results in the curved portion 27of the member12 being projected laterallyin one direction, as shown in Fig. 3, and the like portion 28 of the member 13 being projected laterally in the opposite direction, thereby increasing the strength and efficiency of the f ulcrum members and permitting, without stretching the metal, the sides 14 14 to be given their proper angular position. It will be seen that the flange 17 at one edge, this being the lower edge looking at the left-hand side of Fig. 3, is narrow and that from said edge the said flange 17 gradually broadens, and hence the broader edge of the flange 17, this being the upper edge of said flange looking at the left-hand side of Fig. 3, extends to a considerable extent at the outer face of the flange 19 of the beam 10, and it is important in the formation of the flange 17 that in order to give the latter its proper shape and size the metal be not stretched or unduly weakened. One purpose, therefore, of the special formation presented of the blanks 21 22 is to enable the formation of the flanges 17 and the proper setting of the sides 14 without to any material degree stretching or weakening the forged-metal blanks. The fulerum inembers produced from the blanks illustrated are of increased efficiency and the employment of said blanks materially expedites the manufacture of the fulerum members and in addition enables said members when fornied to be conveniently given their proper positions on the body-beam 10.
In Figs. 1 and 2 l illustrate the fulerum made of two separate parts, and in the practical application of this fulerum to the beam 10 it will be appropriate to connect the inner portions of the sides 14 by means of a bolt or rivet 29 and to employ a separating-piece 30 on said bolt intermediate said sides, the latter being formed with apertures 31 to receive the said bolt or rivet 29. The sides 14 of the fulerum (shown in Figs. 1 and 2) are entirely open at their outer end.
l/Vhile l illustrate in Fig. 1 a fulerum formed of the two members 12 13 and made from the blanks shown in Figs. 4 and 5, I do not wish to limit the invention in every instance to a two-part fulerum, since many of the important features of the invention may be realized in the manufacture of a fulerum in one piece, the fulerum being then produced from a blank 32, (shown in Fig. 7,) which blank corresponds vexactly with the blanks shown in Figs. 4 and 5, except that it is in one integral piece and will be folded at its center, and thereby close the outer end of the fulerum in the manner that the outer end of the fulerum shown in the aforesaid patent No. 720,676 is closed. The blank shown in Fig. 7 has the reverselypffset end portions 23 of the blanks shown in Figs. 4 and 5, and after the end portions of the blank shown in Fig. 7 have been fashioned into the flanges 15, 16, and 17 the blank will be folded at its middle portion and then its sides will correspond exactly with the fulerum members 12 13 of Fig. 1, with the exception that the sides of said members will then be connected at their outer end by what was the middle portion of the blank 32.
What l claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The forged metal brake beam fulerum comprising the angularly-disposed side members having at their inner ends the flanges 15, 16 and 17, said side members having at their inner ends the laterally reversely offset end IIO ' portions `23 for theformation of said flanges;
substantially as set forth. l
2. The forged-metal brake -beam fnlcrum comprising the angularly-disposed side members having at their inner ends the lianges 15, 16 and 17 said side members having at their inner ends the laterally reversely offset end portions 23 for theformation of said flanges, combinedwith means connecting said members adjacent to said lianges 17 and said members beyond said connecting means be- `ing apertnred to receive the bolt for the brakebers having at their inner ends the flanges 15, 16 and 17 said side members having at their lever; substantially as set forth. l

The `forged-metal brake-beam fnlcrum comprising the angnlarly-disposed side meminner ends the laterally reversely offset end portions 23 for the formation of said flanges7 combined With the bolt or rivet and separating-piece connecting and preserving the due relation of said members adjacent to said flanges 17, and said members 'beyond said separating-piece being apertured to receive the bolt for the brake-lever; substantial] y as set forth. l
4. The forged metal brake beam fulcrnm having the independent members 12, 13 open at their outer end and comprising the angularly-disposed sides having at their inner ends the lianges 15, 16 and 17, said members having at their inner ends the laterally reversely offset end portions for the formation of said lianges, and said sides being apertured to receive the bolt for the brake-lever; substantially as set forth.
5. The forged metal brake beam fnlcrum having the independent members 12, 13 open at their outer end and comprising the angularly-disposed sides having at their inner ends the lianges 15, 16 and 17, said members having at their inner ends the laterally reversely offset end portions for the formation of said flanges, and said sides being apertured to receive the bolt for the brake-lever, combined with means connecting said members adjacent to said flanges 17 5 4substantially as set forth.
