TEMPORARY BINDER.
@tige Stlgthirlt rentra tu in tlgrst ttittts tittut mit uniting mutui ligt time.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, N. MENDAL SHAFER, ofthe city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful File and Temporary Binder, for filing or temporarily binding papers, periodicals, music, &c. :1nd do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a transverse vertical section, taken in plane indicated by the line :v :e in tig. 2.
Figure 2 is a plane or top view of the same. I
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts of the invention.
The nature of my invention consists in the use of a metallic back of a book, to be used in tiling 'or binding paper, periodicals, music, Ste.; and to enable others to make and use my invention, I will proceed todeseribc its construction and operation.
The back, shon-'n ing. 1, represents an inside view of the binder, the tin strip represented by letter A hinging on the wire B, all represented by the steel bars E in iig. 1 and iig. 2.
Figure 3 represents an end view of the same.
A represents the steel bars in iig. 2. These bars may be made of any kind of metal, and may be round or Hat, and if of suticient width may be used without the tin or metallic strips. C represents a movable piece of brass, made to slip over the permanent end of the back, andis held {irml-yby the lug or key d, shown in iig. 3. The steel;bars are made to binge permanently on the wire B, which is to be soldered tightin the buck. The movable slide at the upper end of the back is merely to hide tbe hinge, the one at the lower end to hold the steel bars down, and thus secure the papers in the proper place. In order to secure the paper to be filed in the binder, it is necessary to remove the slide C at the lower end, by removing the key d, and raising the steel bar E, and placing the edgeof the paper around itfar enough to surround the steel bar, or.to straddle with a double leaf, and then place it back and adjust the slide. The whole to be made of metallic substance. Brass and tin are of course the best. i
I, of course, do not coninethe structure to any particular length, nor to any particular nutnber of bars, as these should necessarily have a wide range; and I do not wish to confine myself strictly to the drawings, any further than the principle of holding the matter in the clamps.
I claim us new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The series of clamps A A, intersected by the steel bars E, hinging on the wire B. The movable slide C C, and the lug or key d, for securing the sume. rlhe back, to be used in the manner as set forth und described, in combination with the other parts.
N. MENDAL SIIAFER.
