Description

No. 736,105. I PATENTED AUG. 11, 1903.

INKSTAND.
APPLIGATION FILED JULY 9. 1901- NO MODEL 7- 0'2" VZZZJZ 17106 (f UNITED STATES Patented August 11, 1903.
JAMES WV. JACOBUS OF GREATNEOK, NEW YORK.
INKSTAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 736,105, dated August 11, 1903.-
Application filed July 9,1901. Serial No. 671616. (No model.)
- 1"0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, JAMES W. JACOBUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greatneck, county of Nassau, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inkstands, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawing, forming a part of the same.
This invention relates. to improvements in inkstands operating upon the pneumatic principle, and particularly the inkstand shown and described in my prior Letters Patent, No.
571,046, dated November 10, 1896, it being ing, which illustrates by a central vertical section an inkstand constructed according to the present invention.
Referring to said drawing, a represents the body of the inkstand, and b the upper portion or top thereof, which is removable and consists of a plate or disk I) and a cap b, of metal, inclosing and carrying said disk and provided with a flange b which is preferably screw-threaded, so as to engage the correspondingly-threaded upper end of the body portion a. The joint between the body portion a and top I) is located, as will be observed, above the ink-line or supply of ink in the body portion a, so as to prevent leakage between such body portion and top and also prevent clogging of the joint by ink, which would interfere with the ready removal of the top. The top I) is provided with a tube 1), closed at its sides and preferably cast integral with the disk 1), and the lower end of which when the top is placed in position upon the body a lies in close proximity to the bottom of the pen and by reason of its proximity to the bottom of the body a also limiting the amount of ink supplied thereto.
For the purpose of forming an air-tight joint between the body a and the top I) there is interposed between the top 19 and the body a a gasket 0, preferably of rubber, and preferably borne by the disk I) in position to rest against the upper edge of the body a.
The cap b is provided with a sliding cover (Z, which when the inkstand is not in use may be slid over the tube 5 so as to prevent the entrance of dust into said tube.
The inkstand of the present invention, like that of my said prior Letters Patent, is designed for use upon school-desks and to be placed in the openings provided in schooldesks for inkstands. In order to avoid the collection of dust or dirt between the inkstand and the walls of such opening, the inkstand is made so as to fit more or less snugly into such opening, and to prevent scholars from damaging the inkstand-as, for example, by attempting to pry off the top or cover-the latter is preferably of such size and shape as to be flush with the upper face of the desk when the inkstand is in the opening referred to.
The present invention is not limited to the particular construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, in which changes or modifications can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim is 7 An inkstand comprising a body portion and a cap secured thereto by an air-tight joint and bearing a pen-guiding tube, the opening in which is contracted to substantially the size of a pen, the lower end of saidt-ube'proj ecting below the ink-line and into proximity to the bottom of the body portion so as to limit the dip of the pen.
